I'm now the expert on replacing button covers. 😅
Another button cover had come loose on the great back seat in the VW bus. Because the thread was too thin, I had to use my backside to pull it back in place.
Now it takes me 15 minutes per button to repair. 🤣
Tools needed:
* Combination pliers
* Cordless screwdriver
* Sturdy, long needle for upholstery/leather
* Strong thread
* Scissors
That's all you need. Use the needle and screwdriver to push through the base plate. I've figured it out. Push the needle through from the top, then remove it. Insert a wood screw with a non-sharp thread, so that the needle can then be pushed through from the bottom. If the needle isn't as thick (and sturdy) as mine, it's better to insert the wood screw from the bottom and then push the needle through from the top. I was only wondering later what to do if the needle breaks.

However, mine is stable.
*) to prevent the screw of the wooden screw from damaging the upholstery fabric, it should first be "deburred" with sandpaper using a drill, so that the edges of the threads are slightly rounded.
Then, attach the button with needle and thread. From below, through the fabric/cover, to the next fastening point.
Tie the thread securely, cut it off, and you're done. 🤩
I used the following thread for repairing the upholstery button:
