Hello!
I have read about tripod joints (also referred to in the gear ratio overview) several times. Can someone tell me what they are and what they look like? What are the differences and advantages/disadvantages compared to "normal" constant velocity joints?
Best regards,
Dirk.

If I remember correctly, you can't easily replace or modify it, as it's supposedly glued in place and only authorized service centers can do it.

Hello Jürgen!
Thank you for your detailed description! Could anyone perhaps offer photos or similar? You mention that these joints are relatively easy to replace. And you also write that this three-arm piece is pressed onto the end of the drive shaft. How is that to be reconciled (just out of curiosity)?!
Take care.

Does anyone happen to have any photos or similar items for sale?
Hi,
In the photos, you can see a disassembled tripod joint and, for comparison, a 6-ball joint (also known as a CV joint).
Regarding the tripod joint, it's important to note that with a front-wheel-drive system, it can only be used on the differential side and not on the wheel side. This is because the tripod joint cannot be steered as far as would be necessary for steered wheels.
The tripod joint is simpler to manufacture and is usually also lighter when designed to handle the same torque as a constant velocity (CV) joint.
Regards,
Ernst.

That was the principle behind the articulated wave system in the good old Wartburg car.
