Hello, I'm new here and I have a problem that is slowly driving me crazy.
'My manual air conditioning system in my Passat TDI, manufactured in 1994 with a 1Z engine, shuts off at speeds above 100-110 km/h and can only be reactivated after restarting the engine. After several unsuccessful repair attempts, the VW workshop has now identified relay 206 (working contact relay) of the air conditioning system as the culprit (based on error code readings).'
The frustrating thing is that this relay cannot be found. There's no specified location for it in the parts lists, and nobody in the workshop knows where the part is hidden.
Okay, here are my questions: Does anyone here have any idea where the aforementioned relay is located?
Does this relay even exist in my Passat?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Jens.

Hello,
I'm familiar with this issue from my Passat manufactured in 1995, which also has a 1Z engine. In my car, the relay is located in the center console (behind the ashtray). The 'specialist workshop' didn't believe me when I described the problem and said there was a relay in that location, but I know it's there since they installed the auxiliary heater.
It's possible that a missing speedometer signal to the engine control unit is related, as I experienced this issue after replacing the speedometer and the speedometer signal was also absent from the radio. Unfortunately, I can't perform a test to confirm this because the air conditioning system isn't working at the moment (now that the speedometer signal has reappeared...).
Good luck!
Wolfgang.

Hello.
Thanks for the tip, I was already afraid that this relay might not even exist. I'll do another search in the console. I have to go into the settings anyway because now the third speed of the blower fan is also malfunctioning.
The issue with the speed impulse signal has already been investigated, as the workshop also reported problems when a different radio is installed.
Regards,
Jens.

Hello.
I found a relay located behind the ashtray in the center console, which seems to be related to the air conditioning system as well. It clicks when the AC is switched on.
Only this relay has the number 135. The one that VW sold me is number 206.
This raises some questions:
Did you sell me a faulty relay?
Did I find the wrong relay, and is number 206 located somewhere else?
I would be eternally grateful for solutions to this problem , especially since it's currently incredibly hot.
Jens.

Ist denn die Pinbelegung der Relais gleich? Und wie schauts mit dem Schaltsymbol auf dem Relais aus? "Identical?"
If yes: Go ahead and proceed. If not, please provide details about both. Unfortunately, I can't help further with just the numbers alone.
Regards,
Sure.
Here is the translation of the text from German to English:
"Guste" means "gust" in English. It can also be used as a verb, meaning "to gust."

Hello,
The pin configuration is different. The new relay has no other markings. The installed relay does have some markings, but I'll have to take it out again to see them.
Best regards,
Jens

If your air conditioner doesn't work at all without the relay, there's a good chance that it's the faulty relay. I would open the relay, verschandeln the contacts with fine sandpaper or a contact file, resolder the connections, and finally spray them lightly with contact cleaner. If this fixes the problem, you'll know what to replace next time. However, if the problem persists, you can continue troubleshooting. In that case, the relay behind the center console is not the culprit.
The issue of cold-solder joints seems to be becoming an increasingly common problem at Volkswagen. A friend of mine's Passat experienced intermittent engine shutdowns during driving. There were no error codes stored in the system. VW identified the corresponding relay as the cause of the problem. Since the relay was resoldered, the vehicle has been running perfectly fine. Replacing the relay was not necessary.

I wouldn't generalize it like that. There were problems with relay 109 for the power supply of the MSG, but this seemed to be limited to one manufacturer and a specific type of relay. I think it's an exaggeration to talk about general relay problems at VW.

@Alois
My statement was only meant to clarify that these can be difficult-to-locate errors. Repairing the relay is not comparable to the three times my acquaintance had to take his Passat to the workshop for innocent component replacements.
I particularly find it unacceptable that in the automotive industry, unnecessary parts are simply charged to the customer without having actually identified the fault. In my opinion, a repair order is a service contract that includes the successful completion of the repair. Unfortunately, the terms and conditions of these 'specialized workshops' state something different. The subsequent 'case-by-case consideration' with reference to the terms and conditions reminds me of a Turkish bazaar and is incredibly annoying. Many people voluntarily give up on it. And the workshop relies on this. This practice is not common in other industries.

Thank you for the tips.
Unfortunately, the problem was resolved when, on Tuesday, while I was driving to work, a truck pushed me off the road and into the guardrail .
Conclusion: The Passat is a total loss. The driver has a headache and is very upset. An innocent bystander got hit in the face by a piece of debris, 40 meters of guardrail are damaged, and the truck has a scratch.
Best regards,
Jens
