Hi everyone!
I need some advice! I have a 90 hp 1Z engine, and it's now seized. The question is:
1. An AFN engine from an A4 (installed longitudinally) can fit in, with the exception of the transmission.
2. How difficult is it to swap in a 130 hp PD engine from a Golf 4 (including all the necessary components)? Would my 1Z transmission be compatible with both engines?
I would prefer the common rail diesel engine.
I would be grateful for any advice.
Best regards,
The Golfman.

Hello!
While I can't offer any technical advice regarding the renovation, I still want to share my thoughts.
A friend replaced the 1Z TDI engine in a Golf 3 with a PD-TDI engine. I drove it myself last week - the conversion was really done perfectly (I could take a look under the hood).
The engine is also running perfectly - no jerking/hesitation, no fluctuations in acceleration, etc.
Now, regarding the modifications (what he told me):
You will need:
- Electronic throttle from a Golf 4.
- Tachometer unit for a vehicle with 4 cylinders.
- Ignition switch from the 4-series.
- Wiring harness from the 4-series.

He had a diploma in electrical engineering (he's supposed to be an expert in this area). Apparently, nothing will work without the electronic components (wiring harness, etc.) from a fourth-generation Golf, specifically the electronic throttle, ignition switch, and speedometer – likely due to the immobilizer system.
The turbocharger is from a Passat. All the pipes and hoses are arranged across the Volkswagen shelf. The fuel cooler (if I remember correctly) is from a BMW 5 series.
He told me that absolutely nothing fits properly and that everything has to be somehow cobbled together.
The transmission is still the original 1Z model - so far, it's still working. During the test drive, no problems were noticeable.
There are certainly other people here who can tell you much more and who are capable of going into more detail.
Best regards, D.

Okay, great, then the effort involved is way too high!
It would probably be more worthwhile to install an AFN (air fuel nitrogen) system and modify it with a chip.
Does anyone know if the AFN engine from the Audi A4 will fit in a VW Golf 3 1Z, or what modifications would be necessary?

Hi,
While I can't directly help you, here are two helpful links:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1754525837
-> A TDI AFN transmission is available at a (still) great price. By the way, I'm not the seller and I don't know them. I just stumbled upon the auction by chance.
And for the renovation:
http://www.meckisfaq.de/antworten/motor/diesel/1z_2_afn.htm
According to the article, it's not a simple action. Especially the immobilizer is supposed to cause problems. But then there are the Russian friends .
Regards,
Phil.

Hot tip:
Take the engine control unit (ECU) from a T4 TDI. It doesn't have an immobilizer.
