Yes, it seems you really have a rare model...

This was only available in the 1998 model year for U.S.-market vehicles.

{Comfort control unit}

ECU adjustment (USA, models from 9.97 to 05.9icon_cool.gif.

Select STG 46 (Comfort Control Unit).
Adjusting the ECU -> Function 10.

-> Channel 03 (Automatic Lock/Unlock)
The vehicle locks at a speed of 15 km/h (0 = off; 1 = on) and unlocks again when the ignition key is removed.

-> Channel 05 (unlocking horn).
The unlocking is confirmed with a short beep (0 = off; 1 = on).

-> Channel 06 (locking horn).
The locking is confirmed with a short beep (0 = off; 1 = on).

-> Channel 07 (unlock blinking).
The turn signals are activated when the lock is disengaged (0 = off; 1 = on).

-> Channel 08 (locking indicator blinking)
The turn signals are activated when locking (0 = off; 1 = on).

The remaining errors, such as unlocking the car randomly, etc., may be caused by a faulty wiring harness, kinks, etc., which are common problems in Passat/Golf models.

I have configured the "horn activation" (on channel 5 in my system), even though it is not allowed. Sometimes it honks when I turn the key (i.e., at the beginning of the unlocking process), and sometimes only after the locks have been unlocked (i.e., at the end of the unlocking process).

Is that normal?

No, not really.
I once had a similar problem with my G4 where the horn stopped working. The cause was a faulty tailgate lock. A defective microswitch inside it wasn't correctly reporting the closed state to the control unit (ECU).
Faulty microswitches in the locks are a problem for all car manufacturers and often lead to the most peculiar types of malfunctions.

Thank you very much!

Who would have thought that there would also be re-imports from the United States?

I'll take a look at the door lock.

Could it be that a faulty microswitch is responsible for the key problem? At least the synchronization shouldn't work because you have to press the remote control once and then lock or unlock the door. Perhaps the key programming can only be done 'officially,' meaning with confirmation from the door contact switch, after entering the car.
Hello.
Michael.

Given that the microswitch problem often causes amusing error messages and is not uncommon, I would say: Yes.

Okay, now I know:

After the door lock and the immobilizer control unit were replaced, the remote control started working again, and the false alarms stopped.

Since the parts were swapped one after another, I know that both of them were broken.

Thank you for your help.

The Sundance Kid.
