Exhaust Manifold Gasket Replacement: Steps & Guide

Hi.

I discovered a leak in the crankshaft seal.

If I want to make this new now, I'll probably have to take it apart quite a bit.

My "how-to" guide doesn't say anything about it at all.

What all do I need to do?

- Turbo from Kruemmer?
- Remove the shielding plate from the Krümmer!
- Remove the crumb tray and its 8 screws!

How do I turn the 12 Kantschrauben Turbo-Kruemmer?
Does the turbo arrive without a seal and dry at the crumple zone?

What happens to the head studs? Do they stay in the head, or are they replaced?

I don't feel like taking the thing to VW to have it completely taken apart, so I have to do it myself [/url].

The turbo stays on the manifold. Only the oil lines and exhaust system need to be removed.

Hi,
If you don't have the option of breeding a mouse that will replace the mother for you, then it's probably easier to remove the turbo from the exhaust manifold. You should be able to loosen the 12-point screws with a regular 12-point socket.
Stud bolts are typically not replaced unless the nuts are already seized on them, or a thread breaks during removal.
I would definitely replace the nuts, and when assembling, I wouldn't be stingy with the copper grease.

"Be sure to spray it thoroughly with rust remover beforehand! I use 'Anti-Seize' for preservation."

On my 1z, the exhaust manifold came off without removing the turbo (only the heat shield had to be unscrewed). However, I also had the cylinder head lying on the workbench .
