Piston Rings Replacement: Audi 2.5L AEL/AAT

If the cylinder head is already being removed, it's a good idea to replace the piston rings at the same time.

AEL, 170,000 km, it ran great before the diesel fuel disaster, and it didn't even need oil.

Then, let's replace the connecting rod bearings as well.

If you've removed the pistons, you can get a sense of their condition and whether any of them are stuck.

With reasonably good pistons, new rings, and new connecting rod bearings, you essentially have an almost brand-new engine.

Whether it is necessary or makes sense is a different question that cannot be answered so easily.

But: Since it probably won't significantly impact the overall costs or the amount of work involved, I would do it!

Then you can also see if the piston pin is bent, or if the piston ring grooves may already have excessive clearance.
The question then becomes: Where do you stop with the renewal process?
