I just have a Golf IV 115HP AJM in the workshop... it's also consuming water, and it's probably the head gasket that's gone, although the system seems to be sealed. The vehicle has 145,000 kilometers (or miles) on it.

I previously thought that, for example, on an ALH engine without a longlife service interval, the ZR (timing belt) should be replaced after 60,000 km and only then, and not after 90,000 km.
That's not entirely correct; it depends on the manufacturing date. My ALH, manufactured in December 1998, initially had 60,000 km, but then a new belt was installed, and the interval was extended to 90,000 km. All those new ALHs already have 120,000 km on the odometer.
AJM engines are actually quite good, even though the first series was somewhat prone to issues. (new product!!!)
Only the cylinder head gasket is a wear part; regular inspections of the engine should be performed in this area.

So, if a head gasket is considered a wear item, that's just really unfortunate. What kind of preventative checks do you want to perform to prevent a head gasket failure?!?!?
