Hi,

My windshield wipers stop at different positions depending on what I did before.
- If I just briefly touch the wiper control, does it return to the correct end position?
- When I wash the windshield, the wipers move normally and then, after reaching their lowest point, they lift up again about 3 cm.
- With the interval operation (using the programmable 99), the error related to the increasing value also appears.

In addition, it sometimes smells like burning plastic (I suspect this happens when the incorrect end position is reached).

It never smells bad when the wipers end in the correct zero position.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

The annoying thing is that I have to remove the entire wiper arm assembly if I want to take a look at the engine.

Thank you.

Hello Martin!

I'm guessing it might be due to stiff wiper shafts in the windshield wiper assembly.
Recently, I also had to replace the entire wiper linkage assembly on my A3 because the wipers were only moving at a snail's pace and with significant jerking across the windshield.
With the new wiper blade attachment, they now glide across the windshield like lightning.
Due to this extreme difficulty in adjusting the wiper arm mounting, my wipers sometimes remained positioned a bit higher than they should have been.
Check this part; you'll soon see whether it's a mechanical or an electrical problem.

Regards,
Alex.

If the wipers continue to move slowly or quickly even after being turned off for an extended period, I believe it's due to the "timing" of the interval relay.
This is responsible for the interval function (you might not believe it icon_twisted.gif), and for the post-wash wiping; in other operating modes, the motor switches off automatically due to the "UT switch".

Perhaps the smell of ozone is coming from the relay icon_wink.gif.

I also suspected the relay and had already checked it.
icon_arrow.gif It doesn't smell like Amperes.

Could it be that the relay used to switch off also utilizes the UT contact of the motor?

And if the engine runs for too long, it might start to overheat and smoke because the "run-on" contact only provides a minimal amount of current.

I still have a size 19 relay at home; I'll try it out when I get back.
I naturally just gave away the backup-99er icon_sad.gif.

That stupid motor costs 100 euros – I was actually hoping to avoid that expense.

And if the engine has run for a bit too long, it might start to smolder because the "run-on" contact only provides a slight amount of "contact."

"In my opinion, no, because the UT switch is a changeover contact: either the motor is connected to the power supply, or (on both sides) it's connected to ground."
But the power supply and mass should not be short-circuited. If they are, a fuse would blow or at least the light would flicker briefly icon_wink.gif.

In summary, yes. And if it doesn't respond to this or responds late, the motor may sometimes stop just before the end of the cycle – if the voltage for the next wiping cycle hasn't been automatically switched on again yet.

Okay.

Okay, so I hope this thing doesn't break down before Monday, and then I'll check it with the 19mm wrench afterwards.

If nothing else works, I'll have to install a new engine next week "blindly," meaning without knowing exactly what's wrong.

Because I'm not going to Spain with a squealing windshield wiper motor!

It was the windshield wiper lever for me...

Symptoms I'm experiencing:

The wipers would only move up 3-5 cm when used in intermittent mode, and at very high speeds, one of the wipers would even complete a full rotation.

It was also difficult to activate the single-wipe function; you almost had to search for the right spot to touch.

The normal continuous wiping function worked without any problems, and I was also able to correctly return everything to its starting position with it.

I'm not sure how the interval cycle relates to the lever, but whatever it was, it worked after the change.

Enjoy your meal! / Have a good lunch!

I had something similar in my second-generation Golf; it was always located near the engine, and it's the same type of part as you find in the third-generation Golf.
If you remove the engine and take off the plastic cover, you'll see the friction surfaces; mine had regularly burnt spots on them.
If your windshield wiper arm is broken, you probably need a replacement, and I might have one for you; I'll take a look.
whether it still moves easily.

Here's my two cents: I'm experiencing the same problem – the windshield washer fluid system is stuck and there's a strong electrical smell. Additionally, I sometimes notice a very faint smoke coming from the steering column area.
Result of the investigation: The circuit breaker occasionally gets stuck and does not return to the "off" position correctly when switched off.
A little contact cleaner to verschandeln the mechanism was needed, and it worked much better after that.

Sure.

I'm now quite sure that it's the switch.

Being as reckless as I am, I drove to Spain in the condition described above.
Last night near Lyon, something smelled so bad that it was really unpleasant.
If I verschandeln the toilet regularly using interval cleaning, it doesn't smell bad.

Thank you for the tips.

Now I have a good excuse to buy a shifter with MFA buttons icon_wink.gif.

Okay,

The windshield wiper lever (switch) has been replaced (€17), and everything is working fine again.

Thanks for the tips; of course, Volkswagen had said that I should replace the engine!

m;

It is the standard lever, and one with MFA would have cost 47 EUR icon_sad.gif.
