Hello everyone,
'I've been experiencing issues with the 1st and reverse gears of the 6-speed transmission in my Audi A3 8L with the 96kW ASZ engine. Occasionally, I can't get the reverse gear in at all, and sometimes it engages smoothly. The same is true for 1st gear. When trying to engage 1st gear with the car stationary, it sometimes only engages with more force. There's a noticeable increase in resistance about halfway through the shift. Shifting to the higher gears and engaging other gears while the car is stationary are working fine.'
What could be the cause of this? The friendly Audi technician said they want to try changing the transmission fluid. Otherwise, the only other possibility would be the clutch, as it might not be disengaging properly. But shouldn't that have a different effect? Because when you release the clutch, the engine speed normally drops, and there's no feeling of the clutch sticking.
Has anyone ever experienced this problem before, or does anyone have any suggestions on what to check before replacing the clutch?
Thank you for your support!
Regards,
DENNIS.

Shifting into the higher gears, as well as engaging other gears while the car is stopped, is problem-free. |
Try to induce the jerking while the engine is running by repeatedly shifting into the same gear (the first time, the gears might not be properly aligned, which would be normal and cause some resistance -> you might need to rock the car back and forth slightly).
Otherwise, if it also locks when the engine is not running, then the gear linkage adjustment is probably not quite right -> needs adjustment.
If it only locks up when the engine is running, it's more likely a problem with the clutch. Gruß Ulf

Hi,
"I had the same issue with my Polo 6N back then (with a 5-speed and AEX gasoline engine). It started around 40,000 km and persisted until the end (70,000 km). One workshop tried adjusting the gear linkage, while another added different gear oil, which only resulted in a minimal improvement. Towards the end, it also started happening that you would sometimes end up in reverse instead of first gear (which was especially annoying when you wanted to accelerate quickly). With my current knowledge, I suspect that the locking mechanism was worn out due to the general stiffness... but back then, I didn't pursue it further, and now I'm being more careful."
I don't know what happened to it... I sold the car with 70,000 km on the odometer and switched to a TDI.
Best regards,

I also heard that the first 6-speed gearboxes were a bit clunky, which is why some people added different transmission oil.
Perhaps you could inquire about that in a similar way.

I also have a 6-speed transmission, and since I switched to a different type of transmission fluid, the problem has disappeared.
The problem mainly occurred during the winter.
On http://www.michaelneuhaus.de/, you can find a list of defects, which describes it in more detail.
Regards,
Calvin.

Hi.
Has it only been like this since the spring engine flush?
Please make the connections for the cables, where the counterweight is located (I don't know the name ), a bit larger. Martin has some nice photos .
After a test drive, , a qualified mechanic suspected that my transmission had worn synchronizer rings because some gears were difficult or impossible to engage. However, that wasn't the case; I simply had excessive engine power, which caused problems in all areas.
Greetings.

@Above
The gearboxes for the Golf 4 look a bit different compared to the earlier cable-operated gearboxes (02A) like the ones we have.
But generally, are you referring to this?

The Tiger duck is now black and matte again and is lying somewhere on the balcony. I'm driving without the Tilger (a device that shortens shift travel), because then you can shift gears faster, which is often needed in city traffic and is only an advantage with the 02A's long shift travel.
