The transition occurred around 1998 (depending on the model), and since then, it seems there have been no more WFS logins through this method.

According to relevant EU regulations, access to a WFS login should be available, for example, to independent workshops. While VW has partially implemented this, the process is naturally very obscure, but it is possible. Therefore, VW/Audi are not the only ones who can access this data for current models.
Four-digit and seven-digit login codes are essentially the same; the seven-digit code is intended to reduce the sharing of WFS login credentials, but it cannot completely prevent it. The control unit always only knows the four-digit login code, because the diagnostic device converts the seven-digit code into the corresponding four-digit code using the date, WSC, and vehicle identification number. To put it another way, I can use a seven-digit login code even with an older vehicle, just as I can use a four-digit login code with a newer vehicle.
VAG service centers (or those that use their diagnostic equipment with corresponding online access) no longer "see" the WFS login in this way, as their software has been modified to "hide" the login from the user.

Alternatively, it's possible to access the login through a speedometer calibrator. Fortunately, speedometer adjustments are no longer permitted in Germany, but professionals in the industry typically have enough experience to also extract the WFS logins from the engine control units.
Let's exclude the Audi A6 (4F) and Audi A8 (4E) from this discussion, as they have a component protection system that functions somewhat differently.
