Hi gearheads!

I have been following this forum for a long time, and I now have a burning question!
Is it normal for a TDI (ALH) engine to give a slight 'kick' or surge when shifting to a higher gear?
It's hard to explain, but with the gasoline engine, you don't really notice the gear changes, but with the TDI, it jerks occasionally... you can't really shift smoothly.
Now I've already driven quite a few kilometers with gasoline and diesel cars, so I hope it's not due to my driving habits icon_sad.gif.

PS: The shifting is also quite smooth with the work's SDI system.

Best regards, Paul from Tyrol.

Hello Paul,

Could it be that your engine speed decreases too slowly when you release the accelerator pedal?

Best regards, Rainer.

hello!

Hmm, that's a good question, what's too slow... it doesn't seem to be dropping very fast... what could that mean?

I'll check it out today when I'm on my way home.

It kicks in around 2000 RPM, and yours too, I presume?

Hi,

I assume that while shifting, you fully release the accelerator (usually the engine speed will then already be too low for the next gear, unless you're shifting like in Formula 1).
Is the engine speed higher before engaging the higher gear than it is after engaging it, or lower (without any acceleration during the gear shift)?
Briefly: Does the engine speed decrease when engaging the clutch, or does it increase (no rev-matching when shifting, foot completely off the gas before depressing the clutch for a gear change!)?
If it's lower, you probably need to practice a little more icon_wink.gif.
If the engine speed is too high, there may be a problem with the throttle position sensor or the fuel injection pump, which could cause the engine speed to drop too slowly when the accelerator is released; in this case, a jerk when engaging the clutch may be difficult to avoid.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,

Wasn't there something about a clutch pedal sensor that reduces engine load during gear changes – for example, to prevent jerking?

Could a defect or disconnection possibly explain this?
