Hi,

I just came off the highway and noticed that the steering was no longer working. I immediately pulled over and checked what was wrong... There was a small puddle under the power steering pump, and power steering fluid on the undercarriage. There's a crack in the return hose, or whatever it's called, and bubbles are escaping and foaming out, and it seems like something is leaking out.

Okay, here's the translation:

'Now my question... is the pump broken? Because it's no longer steering. There's probably still some fluid in the reservoir.' Can I still drive home tonight (70 km) with this, or will the steering system also fail?

Thank you for your help icon_biggrin.gif,
arne

Hi Arne,

If the pump has run "completely dry," it might be damaged... but I can't tell from a distance.

"He's no longer in control" . . . in a complete system failure, you probably wouldn't be able to write here anymore icon_wink.gif.
You can also drive without power steering (it's a good way to get some arm exercise, especially when parking).
However, I would recommend removing the drive belt beforehand to prevent them from running dry and potentially failing.

Otherwise, I'll fix any leaks at home, top up the power steering fluid (that green stuff!), and then everything should be working again, assuming the pump isn't broken.

Hi Ulf,

ääähhh yes icon_smile.gif and of course. He's no longer providing power steering assistance *g*.

What I'm most concerned about right now is whether the steering system will last for those 70 kilometers without 'power assist.'

Can you tell me if anything else is attached to the belt besides the power steering pump? I'm sorry, I don't have that information memorized.

Thank you very much.

Hi Arne,

The steering system is also involved. My wife has also been driving for a few days without the power steering pump. Before you remove the belt, please check what else is being driven by it. Not that you end up driving around without a coolant pump later icon_wink.gif.

Regards,

Eike.

Okay.

Okay, thank you Eike. I drove home with a clear conscience. The belt is still causing some issues, so I left it on.

So, it was the pressure hose to the steering gear, not the rubber suction hose as initially thought.

It had a worn spot where it rubbed against the suction hose. I just happened to have this long, expensive hose on hand.

The pump makes noises from time to time now, but it's still being used until it breaks down. icon_smile.gif
