Hello,
I'm looking for someone in this forum who can fabricate the special tools needed for the timing belt replacement on an AFN engine at a reasonable cost. Unfortunately, I can't weld myself and I only have basic DIY tools available. The parts are ridiculously expensive as accessories, and as I've read here, they can be easily made yourself.

The following needs to be created:

- Camshaft alignment tool
- Countershaft sprocket (VW 3036)
- Possibly a spanner with a rotating jaw and a pin for the fuel injection pump rotor.

I hope someone finds this...

Greetings.
Reuselkopp.

Hmm, I still have one alignment gauge left over.
Send me your offer, and I will review it.

Hello!
If you still have the one-piece impeller, then go to a well-stocked hardware store and get an M15 screw, which is very rare, but it will fit perfectly! icon_cool.gif
Camshaft locking tool... well... usually, a quick, skillful movement with the AW screwdriver will fix it. If necessary, you can also hold the cam in place with a good valve spring compressor pliers. It's best to do it with two people, and then use a combination wrench and a small hammer to loosen the screw. It might all sound a bit rough, but it's worked perfectly for me for years. icon_twisted.gif
'Spline wrench for the tensioner... a bent snap ring pliers will work just as well, any cheap one from the tool rack at Obi, it doesn't require much force.'
Best regards,
Dominique.

Hello,

@Hati

I sent you a private message!

@D. Briefly.

That sounds quite simple, actually. However, I still have a few questions. What is an AW-Schrauber? Is the camshaft held in place by the WaPU (a type of bearing) between the cams, or is it the cam itself that is held?

Hello Reuselkopp!
AW-Schrauber = Impact wrench... icon_lol.gif
Make sure there's enough clearance between the cam lobes; that's why it's important to use a good quality valve spring compressor so that no debris is created. Any marks that might appear on the cam lobes would be undesirable.
Best regards,
Dominique.

@reusel

If you can find a welder, he might be able to quickly weld this together for you.

At least, I built it using recycled iron, and it's holding up - at least for one JX and one AAB camshaft wheel.

Hi, unfortunately, I don't know anyone who can weld. How about you? Would you be willing and have the time to build such a tool for me? Of course, not for free...

Hi reusel,

Where are you from?

I bought the rolling machine for 8 euros - cheaper than the shipping cost if you order it from somewhere else.

Hi,
I live in Bad Camberg. To create a tensioning roll, I'll probably buy one of those snap ring pliers. Or, they cost around 10€ including shipping at iiibee.
I didn't really want to use a timing belt just to replace the camshaft sprocket. I know my way around cars, but something's bound to go wrong, and then I'll be stuck and won't be able to get the car running again.

It actually works without special tools, as long as you install the new one exactly the same way as the old one.
