I bought such an expensive filter for 80€. Do I need to fill the filter with diesel, or is that not necessary?

Does turning the ignition on fill the pump?

Vehicle: VW T5, manufactured in September 2003, model ACX, 1.9L engine, 63 kW.

I believe the pump is only briefly activated by the ignition. If you have a VAG-Com, you can use it to bleed the system, which is easier.

Today I performed the service on the T5 and filled the diesel filter with diesel.

It started right up, and it's running perfectly again.
