My AHF (presumably a specific component or system) causes strong vibrations, which naturally also leads to corresponding driving noises. I've heard that VW has very high manufacturing tolerances, and that this can cause some engines to vibrate more than others.
One method would be to precisely balance the crankshaft and to balance and angle the pistons.
Does anyone have any experience with this, or know a specialist? The engine is installed in a T3 and doesn't have a dual-mass flywheel. Could there be other causes for this?

Best regards, Mike.

Is the engine mount broken or is the flexible pipe damaged?

Hi,

I would also suspect the engine mounts.
What is piston tilt?

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi,

.

I highly doubt the problem lies with the engine itself, but rather with the modifications that were made. There are plenty of possibilities there:
- missing content management system (CMS)
- Motor or gearbox mount.
- Exhaust system (with or without a flexible pipe?)
- ...

If you want more help, more information is needed.
What kind of bus is it exactly?
Who carried out the renovation, and when?
When did it first occur, and under what circumstances?
etc.

Okay, so the engine is installed in a VW T3. It's always had that rumbling noise. It hasn't had any other modifications. We've tried everything: soundproofing, driving without an exhaust, suspending the engine with a chain, installing a dual-mass flywheel, etc. Now, I'm trying to figure out what within the engine itself could be causing the vibrations, because that's the only thing that could possibly be the issue.

It doesn't necessarily mean angling the piston, but rather angling the connecting rod, specifically so that the small and large connecting rod eyes are perfectly aligned vertically above each other.

Enjoy your meal!

'Who carried out the conversion? Do you know what parts were used, specifically in the engine mount/bearing area?'

I did the conversion myself, and to reiterate, this is specifically about the engine itself; everything else can be ruled out.

Is the engine still original, or has someone possibly tinkered with it before, perhaps even installing the pistons incorrectly? At least in some 4-cylinder engines, not all the pistons are the same. (Search function - there was something about this here before).

If it's vibrating strongly, like an orbital sander, even at relatively low speeds, it's unlikely that fine balancing will fix the issue. It's possible that one of the pistons has a significant weight imbalance, or that the problem lies elsewhere.

I only have experience with balancing from my old GTI 1.8, where I balanced the entire crankshaft and the crankshaft with flywheel were finely balanced. It was quite remarkable that the difference between the lightest and heaviest components was so noticeable.
(The piston, connecting rod, and valve cover assembly) weighed approximately 12-15 grams. The result of all this was a very smooth-revving engine (around 7000 RPM at the time).
with hardly any trace of vibration.

I thought so too. I remember when our special cross-country vehicle had its E30 M3 engine meticulously balanced. The engine speed was then 9200 RPM, but the entire engine was also completely rebuilt by the tuner.
Thank you for the information, BM.
