Hello everyone,

We had a discussion a while back about strange noises that occur around 2000 RPM and when accelerating, which some of us have heard. We eventually concluded that these noises are probably normal – similar to the sounds that valves can make in a cold engine when the hydraulic lifters haven't yet built up enough pressure.

Today, when the engine was warm, I heard a very faint, unusual sound, possibly a knocking sound, although it's hard to tell because the noises are very brief during acceleration. It's difficult to describe... maybe something like the sound of engine knocking in a gasoline engine, but very quiet. Perhaps it's a combination of a quiet combustion sound and the aforementioned vent-like noise?

I'm guessing, just like with the other noise, that it's the normal exhaust sounds, which probably vary depending on the exact type of diesel fuel (for me, it's almost always Aral) and the temperature.

What do you think?

Best regards,

Jan.

P.S. By the way, I first noticed the noise on the same day that I also discovered the bulge (see the bodywork forum), but there's probably no connection between the two. It's more likely that I filled up the tank the day before, and perhaps I got a slightly different type of Aral Super Diesel...

The ringing doesn't always have to come from the engine; first, check if a screw or something else metallic might be loose and vibrating at certain RPMs. Also, don't forget about the keychain in the ignition, it once gave me a little fright (but it wasn't a TDI). icon_smile.gif

Best regards, Rainer.

...I had also thought that before, but the rhythm fits too well with the sounds of combustion... it's just a slightly higher-pitched knocking sound when you gently press the accelerator - presumably, the louder knocking sound when you accelerate more strongly is an intensification of that.

And most likely, it's normal... that's why I'm asking if these descriptions sound familiar to anyone. Exhaust noises are not uncommon.

Or, to put it another way: Has anyone ever noticed a slightly different sound when driving after refueling (i.e., with presumably different diesel fuel)? I can easily imagine that this has an influence on diesel engines, depending on the cetane number.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello Jan,

on my Golf IV TDI PD with 74 kW, which is practically brand new.
Does it sometimes make a brief ringing sound when accelerating?
It usually happens around 1800 RPM, and I also have...
filled up with Aral Super Diesel, second tankful. icon_wink.gif
He got his first tank of gas at a free-standing gas station in...
I got it from Holland, I mean, I've had it before as well.
I think I heard a ringing.
I was also quite worried about this, and I have...
Have you considered stopping by the workshop?
Well, at least someone else's phone is ringing.

Best regards,
Martin
