Wheel Center Cap Tool: Official & OEM

HI,

Is there an official tool available to pry off these wheel center caps from a Seat Leon MJ 01?

I somehow managed to get the parts out of the rim, but it would certainly have been easier with the right tools. Using objects that are too sharp or pointed can quickly scratch the rim, which can lead to corrosion.

I think that thing I have (or had... I couldn't find it recently) would work. It's basically a 2mm thick wire that's bent into a U-shape with the ends bent over, which you can insert into the two holes, then fold over and pull. It should be made of a sturdy wire, but still be easy to bend.

You can also buy these U-shaped brackets from VW dealers - and probably from Seat dealers as well.

Or you could ask Seat about part number 6X0 012 243 (although I think that's probably a nose piece).

You're seriously paying money for about 10cm of wire? You can easily make that yourself in a minute from a 2mm welding wire or something similar. The holes probably match those of VW.
I can take a picture of that 'mysterious' cap remover tomorrow. It's a real 'special tool' .

Regarding durability. The hubcaps are brand new (the previous owner must have neglected to replace the originals), and they fit very securely.

I had wedged a piece of wood into a hole and pushed the lid forward as far as I could, so that I could just fit a finger underneath. Then I clenched my teeth (because the lid was biting), and I managed to pry the thing out.

A tool, whether original or self-made, must be very stable because significant forces are generated when using leverage.
I would say that anything I can bend myself will also end up crooked on the lid.

I'll check the part numbers at the VW/Seat dealer next time... although, they probably have to order the parts .

I always use a very small 90-degree Allen wrench for this. If it's too long, you can grind it down. It has excellent strength. If you slip off the handle, you need to roughen it up a bit.

If the fuel tank cover is locked, then the latch is also likely locked. Have you already checked the trunk? In my Golf, the latch was also hidden in a very small slot, next to the spare jack, and it wasn't obvious to someone who didn't know where to look (I didn't know).
However, as I mentioned before, this is more of a toy than a tool, although I did manage to remove some plastic caps from the bolts on my aluminum rims using it.

And I also need to check the trunk sometime. I've found all sorts of things in there before.
e.g., the original code sticker on the protective film, and also the one for the service booklet, which was empty.

So, they took the part off the truck, put the license plate on it, and it's ready.

The date of first registration, which is written above the sticker in the service booklet, is nicely filled in...
