, the actual WFS (Wireless Flexible System) is located in the engine control unit.

The speedometer is just the 'connection' that brings all the components together. CAN gateway <-> key <-> reading coil <-> engine control unit, and this is where the key data is stored. If you have the speedometer, the control unit, and the keys/transponders, you only need to reverse the polarity and you can start.
3. Does anyone know if I can install a speedometer from a 05/2002 Bora into my 06/99 Bora without having to rewire the interior wiring harness?
The internal wiring harness has little to do with the speedometer connections. The difference may be in the connection to the comfort CAN bus. Alternatively, the pins with comparable connections need to be rewired. This can be seen in the specific pinout of the speedometer (depending on the year of manufacture). An overview of the pinout was previously available in the GTI-TDI forum, taking into account the vehicle and year of manufacture.
I've just noticed that you already have a thread running on that topic.
I think we can then mark this topic as complete.
