My wife's Polo 6N1 has already covered 310,000 km. The engine is an AEE. The transmission is a DKE. The car was manufactured in 1996 and therefore has the older type of ignition system (ZE). Nothing has been done to the engine except for the usual maintenance work such as oil changes, BEDI cleaning, spark plugs, and seals for the oil pan and valve cover. The engine has been consuming oil for some time now, so with this mileage, I'm considering two possibilities:
1. Complete engine overhaul.
Replacement engine with as few kilometers/miles as possible.

My idea is to take the technology from a suitable donor vehicle.

This engine has been used in various models within the Volkswagen Group, but some of them are not compatible with the Polo, at least not without modifications.

Therefore, my first question is: What components is the engine management system (MKB) connected to? Is it linked to the engine block, cylinder head, fuel injection system, etc.?

According to my research, the AEE (presumably a specific component) has been installed in the following models of the company:

    Polo
    Polo Classic.
    Volkswagen Golf Mk3.
    Seat Ibiza.
    Seat Toledo.
    Seat Cordoba.
    Skoda Felicia.
    Skoda Octavia.

Which models have used the same AEE engine as in the Polo? In my opinion, the engines of the following models are unsuitable due to significant modifications required:

    Volkswagen Golf Mk3.
    Polo Classic.
    Seat Toledo.
    SEAT Octavia.
Viele Grüße
Andreas

The engine block is only connected to the specific engine code (MKB), and everything attached to it can be different. The cylinder head is usually the same, but it can also vary depending on whether the engine is mounted longitudinally or transversely, although there aren't many engines that share the same MKB in those cases. In your case, however, this is irrelevant because the AEE engine was only available with a transverse mounting.

It's possible that even an engine block with the same engine code might not be compatible, especially if there are significant differences in revisions (models from widely different years). For example, a standing versus hanging engine mount could cause problems; threaded holes for the engine mounts or other components might be missing.
Make sure the engine comes from a donor vehicle with identical engine mounting points and is not significantly older.

Hi there.

You absolutely need an AEE (Abgasuntersuchungsprotokoll - emission test report) from Polo & Co. where the starter motor is located on the rear of the engine. The Golf 3 has a different type of transmission installed, where the starter motor is located at the front, in front of the transmission, like with the EA 827 engines.

I would start by replacing the VSD; it's only 20 euros for the parts and a bit of work.

Best regards, Rüdi.

Regarding the engines, the crankcase ventilation system often became clogged.
This results in a relatively high internal engine pressure, which naturally promotes oil consumption.
It's located behind the engine, under the intake manifold, and it looks like a round plastic container that is usually completely filled with sludge, including the hoses.
Remove and verschandeln or replace the hoses and tubes.

These engines also don't perform optimally when filled with the commonly used 5W30/40 oils today; a standard, good quality 10W40 is perfect for this engine design. We also had a 6N with 60 horsepower in the family, which also ran well with the 5W40 that I normally use in our vehicles.
After switching to 10W40, it was fine. The oil consumption then became about 1 liter per year / approximately 7000 km, which I considered acceptable.

Mpire

I verschandeln it at most every two years.

He has only ever received 10W40 oil from me.

I believe the engine has accumulated significantly more mileage than comparable engines, despite good maintenance and cleaning. It's also starting to show signs of leakage from various seals and gaskets. Therefore, I think a good replacement engine is the more cost-effective alternative in terms of both money and time.
Viele Grüße
Andreas

What is the oil consumption like?
The thing about oil viscosity also makes sense. With the good old GTX3 15W-40 (or Magnatec), I noticed a slightly higher oil consumption after about 10,000 km. With the 10W-40 from the same manufacturer, many things weren't as leaky anymore.

To be honest, I've stopped taking notes about it. I can fill in the details if needed.

For my personal taste, it's too much. It will definitely consume more than 1 liter per 10,000 km.

"1 liter per 10,000 kilometers is nothing at all, especially considering the problems with TFSI engines, which can consume up to 3 liters per 1,000 kilometers."

If necessary, adjust the engine's oil level and continue driving it; any other engine might require even more oil.

Assuming that's not a typo, I absolutely cannot understand the reasoning behind this. An oil consumption of around 150ml per 1000km is in no way sufficient justification for replacing the engine. As Rüdi already mentioned, the "new" one could potentially consume significantly more with a bit of bad luck.
