Hello,

I hope it will not be considered a violation of the 10th commandment of the forum rules if I ask the following question here icon_wink.gif:

What components make up the resonance system that is responsible for the wonderful rumbling intake sound in the current Golf VI GTD 125 kW CR, and presumably also in the Scirocco? I suspect that modifications have been made in the air filter area.

Can these modified parts also be retrofitted to a standard G VI 103 kW CR TDI?
Has anyone done this before?
Gruß
Roger

Hi Roger,

Can you describe the G6 system in more detail?
What's different about this compared to the G5?

Because the G5 (105 hp) and 3C (BLS, BMP, BMR) engines are very similar and have a very similar sound.

Is that really achieved through modifications to the intake manifold?
Interestingly, I once read in what were probably unreliable sources that it was only... let's just say... created in a sound lab icon_wink.gif.
Type away! I'm curious icon_biggrin.gif.

Unfortunately, I don't have any more specific information about it, other than that it's likely a particular feature of the G VI GTD (and probably also the Scirocco 125 kW).

I drove it, and the sound is really great. It's definitely not like a tractor anymore; it's more of a deep rumble under load, similar to a V8. It just sounds amazing icon_cool.gif. However, there have been reports online that it might actually be an MP3 file being played, which changes speed and volume depending on the engine speed and load icon_eek.gif. I think that's just a rumor, but I would be very interested in the technical details.

The only information I could find on that topic is in a report from ams.

Quote:
The GTD no longer identifies itself as a diesel – at least not when the accelerator is pressed between 2,000 and 4,000/min. You could definitely win bets against a diesel hater: the GTD growls almost like the GTI. The intake noise is amplified by a resonator with a vibrating membrane, which produces a similar sound to an open air filter box, but is only audible inside the vehicle. With the GTD, VW is now changing the process, but the result sounds similar – and drowns out the last rattling sounds that are just escaping from the engine insulation.

Designer sound.
In practice, the diesel engine is indeed a quiet companion. However, the rough diesel noise is still clearly audible when the engine is idling. And at higher speeds, around 3,000 RPM, a dull rumble can be heard under load. When asked about the noise, engine developer Ilja Dentzer smiles. Because the sound is not a product of the diesel engine itself, but is generated electronically. We are astonished. We knew that the sound of cars has long been actively designed, but we didn't know that electronic means are used for this. "Yes, it's an MP3 file," confirms Dentzer. It is supposed to sound sporty, but in our opinion, it doesn't sound powerful, but rather dull. Anyone who drives at 200 km/h on the highway for a longer period will soon wish the noise away. "Probably the workshop can do that, simply by disconnecting the speaker," says Dentzer.

That was the other source I had found. But I just couldn't bring myself to believe it...
So is the euphemistic phrasing in the article "With GTD, VW is now changing the process, but the result sounds similar" ultimately just a way to avoid publicly naming the fake icon_twisted.gif?

Ouch.

Just take out the radio icon_smile.gif.
Or disconnect its fuse.

Then it shouldn't be able to play MP3 files anymore, or are the speakers now connected to the CAN icon_smile.gif?

I haven't even ordered the car yet... and it's hardly possible to do during a test drive.
You can find absolutely nothing about what one could potentially study icon_wink.gif. In my opinion, this concealment actually speaks more in favor of it being a fake.
I need to take a look at the file; there should be a modified audio device in there. Or perhaps it's just being properly encoded.

Oh dear...

"I need my car to last a few more years, but the fact that it's now also acoustically terrifying is just great. This solution probably originated for cost reasons, because a pipe running from the intake area to the cockpit must surely be a few cents more expensive."

I don't believe that. This solution was developed because it's almost impossible to create using the engine itself. A simple pipe wouldn't have been nearly enough. Diesel engines just don't sound particularly pleasant, neither from the intake nor the exhaust.

(1) Now that diesels also have real throttle valves, they should be able to produce much more of that "tuning-style" engine noise.
I'm going to take my BLS out for a ride "topless" this time...

(2) I'm going to check out the GTD today, if they have one available when I pick up my 3C.

(3) The loudspeaker theory can be easily tested by having one person drive while the other listens through the tweeters. So, place a beet in the footwell and attach a listening device to the speaker membrane.

"Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English."
GTD-V8-Sound im Jamba! Sparabo.
Send "Brüll17" to 12345 and get that awesome V8 sound.
"Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English."

I would have really liked a different turn signal sound.

Yes, go ahead icon_smile.gif.

However, you need to know this before taking a test drive. I didn't know, and unfortunately, there aren't many dealerships that have a certified GTD in stock.

icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

Well, when it comes to turn signals, that's quite common, and the next step to a fake engine sound is just a small one... It's easy to integrate that into standard radio systems.

Hmmm, I wanted to order the Dynaudio option as well, will the engine then sound truly audiophile? icon_cool.gif

I can already see the "BumBum" tuning crowd. "Help, ever since I installed my big Pioneer [head unit], the engine sounds like a vacuum cleaner" icon_biggrin.gif.

And the Golf VIII with the 0.8l FSI turbocharger will then get external speakers so that it can at least sound like it has a motor from the outside icon_lol.gif.

Matthias,

That's not terror, it sounds really good, and it's only audible under full load. Have you ever heard a current BMW M5 driving by under load? They seem to have recorded a sound similar to that and are playing it back quietly .

Wouldn't it be better to just get a gasoline car, like a (used) GTI, or do you drive so much that it would be significantly more expensive?
