Problem was:
The adjustment for the beam width on the left side was no longer working, and the headlight seemed to be set much too high.
The cause was:
The ball head of the servo motor actuator somehow popped out of its socket. I have no idea why. Any suggestions regarding the possible cause would be greatly appreciated.
Repair:
The left headlight can be accessed with some skill without removing the headlight unit, while the right one requires the headlight unit to be removed.
1) Set the beam distance to maximum (position "0").
2) Remove the bumper cover.
- Unscrew 3 screws from each side of the frame, on the left and right.
- Remove the four plastic pins that secure the bumper cover to the radiator support by pushing the inner pins outwards from underneath.
- Loosen the two screws that secure the lower part of the bumper cover.
- Using firm pressure, snap off the trim pieces on the right and left sides of the fender.
3) Unscrew and remove the headlights (remove the halogen bulbs and cables beforehand).
4) Remove the actuator by simply turning it clockwise.
5) Now, the actuator motor needs to be turned further outwards.
- I couldn't achieve that with VAGCOM, so:
- Clip the actuator motor in place, then use a plastic screwdriver or similar tool to rotate the gear as far as possible so that the actuator extends outwards. If the device is already open and somewhat older, you can also lubricate it with some grease.
- Reattach the actuator motor, inserting it at an angle into the beginning of the track (opposite the ball head of the actuator). Screw the actuator motor into the spotlight.
6) Reassemble everything. Total time required: approximately 1.5 hours.

It's possible that I'm not understanding you correctly, but why did you have to turn the actuator motor further than it was actually intended to go?
Couldn't you simply manually adjust the reflector so that it's closer to the stepper motor? That worked perfectly for my Golf 3, which had the same problem.
Regards,
Guste.

Although I forcefully pulled the headlight housing upwards, the ball joint of the angled actuator motor didn't come close enough to the rail. However, it was only off by about 3mm.
Maybe my headlight was adjusted differently than yours?
Do you know why your headlight popped out?

Of course, that's possible. It's also possible that the headlights for an A3 and a Golf 3 are different, so my method might not be transferable to yours, or you might have needed to adjust the horizontal/vertical adjustment to implement my idea.

Initially, it didn't, but later, the part shown in the attachment crumbled. I then reprinted it using a 3D plastic printer (I had access to one through an acquaintance). These were much more stable because they were fully printed and didn't just consist of thin supports, unlike the originals.
I have 2-5 of these spare parts available, in case anyone needs them. They're probably the typical part that breaks on the G3 headlight.
Best regards,
Guste.

"So, with the A3 facelift, the ball joint is only attached to a threaded rod that is moved up and down by the actuator motor. That's likely the reason why I had to twist my actuator, while you didn't."
