Audi A4 AFN: Turbocharger Alternatives

Hi.

We are replacing the turbocharger on my brother's 1996 Audi A4 1.9 TDI AFN.
The original charger has the part number 028 145 702 C or CX.

Are there any chargers that would fit as a direct replacement, such as the 028 145 702 H? I would install anything that is plug-and-play or can be adapted with minor modifications, such as rotating the compressor or turbine housing. However, I don't want to convert to a charger with a fixed exhaust manifold!
