I have a Passat, model year 1997, where the air conditioning system is not working.
I'm getting 2 bar of pressure on the low-pressure side and only 2 bar on the high-pressure side when the system is idling.

I thought it might be due to a lack of refrigerant. I extracted 450 grams, and filled it with 1150 grams.

Now I have a static pressure of 5 bar. When I let the engine idle, the low-pressure side drops to 2 bar, which is normal, but the high-pressure side also drops to 2 bar.

I have now measured the temperatures.
On the suction side, after the expansion valve, I'm also measuring 26°C at the compressor.
On the high-pressure side, I have 28°C after the compressor, but only 2°C at the dryer! And before and after the expansion valve, the temperature is between 6°C and 11°C, which is exactly the opposite of what it should be.
Tap the expansion valve.
Could it be that if the expansion valve is open too much, I'm not getting enough pressure on the high-pressure side, and that's why the dryer is getting so cold?

What else I've noticed. After the engine is stopped, the pressures increase more slowly than usual until they reach the static pressure level again.

The problem is with the saturated/defective dryer!

Have you experienced this problem before, or are you just suspecting it?

But it sounds logical. If the dryer is a bottleneck, then the refrigerant expands here.

I once had a similar problem, just as you described. The bottleneck is the dryer, and after that bottleneck, the airflow expands. The dryer isn't expensive, and neither is the expansion valve.

If the dryer is working properly, the pipe that goes in will be warm/hot, and the pipe that goes out will be cold.
You can check it if you like.
If there is no significant temperature difference between the two lines, then it's not due to that. icon_wink.gif
