Hello,

"Based on the current error message '19463 NW sensor sporadic, no signal', I have a question: Is it possible to replace the NW sensor on a Polo AXR engine (1.9L, 74 kW) without having to remove the timing belt and the crankshaft position wheel?"

The interest payment is due later.

Thank you. Best regards, Klaus.

Thank you "Mulle," but that's not what I wanted to hear icon_sad.gif.

Does anyone have any other ideas? icon_idea.gif

Okay, just as I was about to investigate, the NW error has disappeared, but now I'm getting a "throttle valve interruption, short circuit to ground" error.
While replacing the damper housing, I noticed a broken cable right next to the connector. I repaired it, but left the new actuator in place. All the errors are now gone.
Now, on the way home, the ABS and ASR warning lights came on. Brake light switch implausible.
Bus in single-wire mode...
Left-side cable connector passing through the A-pillar: Many of the pins are corroded or broken.

Read the brake light switch, and both bits are changing simultaneously to 1 or 0, so it's working okay for now... but I'm still going to buy a new one.

An electrical disaster.

If the knock sensor only appears as an error, I'll wait until the 120,000 km timing belt replacement and have it replaced then as well.

Based on what I see in old photos, it seems the Hall sensor can be replaced without removing the pulley and timing belt.

I've often replaced the G40 thermostat on 1.9 TDI engines without having to remove the timing belt.

Thank you for the two encouraging suggestions after all.
Now, I'm going to use a mirror to see the retaining screw. You can see a rubber grommet on the outside, which the sensor might need to pass through.

Look at this.
The photo below is of an AXR. Unfortunately, the pressure hose obstructs the view.
The top photo is of an AJM, but it should be the same regarding the G40.

Okay, thanks. I just saw that too, but I'm still not sure where the connector needs to pass through to the other side, because the cable with the large connector is attached and needs to stay connected.
I need to loosen the screw tomorrow.
I thought the plastic cover underneath still needed to be removed, along with the top pulley, but apparently not if you've already done it.

I thought that the plastic cover underneath still needed to be removed, and that would require removing the top pulley? But apparently not, if you've already done it.

Exactly that one needs to be removed icon_wink.gif.

Okay, with the AJM, it definitely comes out that way, which is easy to see. I removed it back then (in 2005) to get the distributor cap off without further disassembly. I think the connector passes through the opening in the rubber grommet. I didn't switch anything off back then. icon_wink.gif

Thanks for the pictures. It seems like the sensor can be detached and the cable routed through the opening to the rubber grommet, then threaded through it. Alternatively, you could pull the connector and cable out from the sensor side.

G40 exchange = possible with AXR engine without removing the timing chain.
Here are some potentially insightful images.
You can see the opening, which is normally closed with a large, oval rubber stopper. From the sensor, a small recess leads to this opening, which you only see once the sensor has been removed.
The sensor only extends and retracts on the timing belt side.

Really without removing the plastic, etc.? icon_eek.gif Well, then it must have been easy. icon_wink.gif

Yes, exactly. There's a long hole in the plastic that leads to a breakthrough, which is covered by a cap. However, it's difficult to see because it's obscured by the strap. I also thought it wasn't possible until I loosened the micro-encapsulated M6 SW 10mm screw and wiggled the sensor cable.
So, it's a matter of 20 minutes.
