What are your maximum oil temperatures like with this hot summer weather?
My 2.0 TDI sometimes reaches temperatures of up to 115°C when towing or driving on country roads.
Are there any values or metrics that should trigger concern and prompt someone to take a longer break?

... above 140°C, I would slightly lift the foot. icon_smile_thumb_up.gif

There are also some particularly anxious people who would do it even at a temperature of just 10 degrees beforehand...

Everything is harmless! icon_lol.gif My 450 reaches temperatures of 140-150 degrees very quickly when stuck in traffic. If it starts moving again, the temperature only drops to around 120 degrees.

10W60 instead of 10W40? icon_wink.gif Or, as before, simply not drive for as long with the oil and change it more frequently than recommended?

My 125cc scooter can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h even in traffic jams. And it also struggles to dissipate heat. The oil is supposed to be changed every 6,000 km here. I change it annually, but I'll probably reach that mileage this year as well.

I have never seen a standard TDI engine reach temperatures that would be considered critically high, even when towing in the summer.
When I was young, I once had a black Ford Probe 24V. The front end was mostly solid and it only had undersized air vents. In the height of summer, it would quickly reach temperatures close to 140°C. That's why I switched it to a special engine oil from Motul, specifically designed for that purpose, which was ester-based. It ran perfectly with that oil. There were never any problems with the engine. And the oil consumption was very close to zero, unlike with regular 10W-40 oil. Those were good times...

"Ester technology reduces the oil temperature in the vicinity of the cylinder head by 10°C."
In essence, that's what they mean when they write it in the technical datasheet.
Here is the text for those who are interested in reading more about it:

It's somewhat off-topic, but naturally, an oil like that wouldn't have a Volkswagen approval.

Golf 5 (BKD): Maximum engine temperature of 120°C - Full throttle on the highway (read out with a Kufatec module).
Treg V10 TDI (AYH): Maximum temperature of 115°C even with a trailer attached.
Alltrack with (CFGC): maximum 125°, but overall always higher than the Golf!

All vehicles are performance-optimized!

Hello!

Based on my recollections from back in the day, I believe that at 140°C, things definitely start to go wrong.

I used to own a Corrado VR6, and I remember once, at an outside temperature of 20°C, after driving it flat out on the highway for about 10 minutes, the oil temperature almost reached 150°C.

When I realized what was happening, I quickly lifted my right foot.
The car just wasn't built to handle that much power; it was like they crammed a huge engine into a tiny chassis.
Grüße, Steffen!

On our vacation trip with our Sharan TDI with 177 horsepower, the oil temperature never exceeded 120°C. It was fully loaded with 6 people onboard, including a roof box. My maximum speed on the speedometer was 200 km/h. icon_cool.gif This means that I wasn't constantly driving around at 130 km/h.
Viele Grüße
Andreas

Sharan TDI with 170 horsepower, fully loaded and towing a 1700 kg caravan uphill over the Thurn Pass and the Plöcken Pass: engine temperature reached nearly 140°C.
At times, he could only manage speeds of around 70 km/h. When the water temperature gauge started to rise, I took my foot off the accelerator and kept the water temperature at approximately 105°C. The oil temperature remained within the range of 130-138°C.

"Full throttle" combined with high speed usually doesn't pose a problem for oil temperature. The challenge is driving at low speeds under constant heavy load.

Skoda Superb 3V 110kW
During normal operation, the temperature should always be within the range of 90°C to 110°C.

If I accelerate and reach speeds around 200 km/h, the temperature already reaches 130°C.

Hello,

"I have now observed the maximum oil temperatures over several summers. My Caddy 2.0 TDI CFHC, fully loaded with a 1.4-ton caravan attached, reaches a maximum of 120°C. It maintains this temperature even when driving up the Pfänder mountain."

Greetings.
Alex.

My coolant temperature (DLBA) in my GTI has always remained below 120 degrees Celsius. Under partial load, it stays within the range of 100-110 degrees Celsius. When under full load, it initially drops to 97-98 degrees Celsius and then slowly increases again.

Despite the addition of a lower engine fairing and a plastic oil pan, the engine is in absolutely excellent thermal condition.
