New Beetle TDI: 5. The gang can't go out anymore

Mein New Beetle TDI hat offenbar ein Getriebeproblem: Der 5. Gang geht einfach nicht mehr raus, was immer ich mache. Ich traue mich nicht, noch stärker am Schalthebel zu rupfen, ohne dass etwas vom Schaltgestänge Schaden nimmt. Zum Glück ist das Auto ohnehin abgemeldet aber es sollte wieder fahrbar werden; das Auto habe ich noch selber in die Garage gefahren und da konnte ich noch schalten und habe nichts weiter bemerkt. Während ich am Innenraum gearbeitet habe habe ich irgendwann bei stehendem Motor die Gänge durchgeschaltet und im Fünften blieb es einfach hängen. Ich habe überprüft, dass es (leider) nicht ein Problem des Schaltgestänges oder der Seilzüge ist, indem ich diese probehalber am Getriebe abgehängt habe. Der Schalthebel hakelte dann überhaupt nicht aber vorne am Getriebe konnte ich auch von Hand nichts machen (Kupplung war mit einer Stange gegen den Sitz festgestellt).

It's a DQY transmission with approximately 300,000 km on it, assuming it's the original one. I've also heard that some 02J transmissions have issues, does the DQY fall into that category? What exactly can cause this problem, and is it a typical type of damage for this transmission?

When the engine is switched off, the gear should be able to be disengaged without pressing the clutch pedal, unless the drive system is locked (e.g., the wheels are against the engine).
Does anything change if you push the car back and forth, sometimes engaging the clutch and sometimes not?

Another consideration is to drain the transmission fluid and examine it for metal shavings. Further insights may emerge from this.

Otherwise, in this obviously jammed state, only disassembly and, possibly, opening the gearbox will help.

"Does the gearbox have a side metal cover? If so, open it up. You should be able to see the gear wheel for the fifth gear. However, oil might leak out, so place a container underneath."

Please excuse my delayed response; the car is parked outside, and I haven't been able to get to it for a while.

Actually, the problem with the car being stuck could be solved by pushing and pulling it, as Herbert had suggested. I never would have thought of that. Normally, this behavior isn't typical either, but does it provide a more specific clue about the actual problem?

I hadn't read the other responses yet, so I hadn't really looked at the situation in detail. I mean, the DQY probably has a cover, but how easily accessible it is is a different matter with the Beetle.
