Conversion of a genuine leather gear knob to fit the VW T6 gear stick.
For T6 drivers who paid for their own vehicle, there are no tears. Such a beautiful and expensive vehicle, and yet the "leather trim" is partially made of the cheapest imitation.
The shift boot in my T6 would develop holes and become defective every 3 years. Since I didn't want to install another low-quality part, I decided to replace the shift boot with one made of genuine leather.
I found what I was looking for online and purchased a replacement part for a BMW vehicle for a reasonable price. I could only find PU leather imitation for the T6, so nothing sustainable.
The gear stick can be easily removed. Under the cover with the gear indicator on the gear knob, there is a Torx screw that secures the gear knob. The indicator panel cover can be pried off from the outer side using a fingernail or a piece of plastic.
Lift the bottom (black border with the flap) on the back side upwards, reach inside the flap, and fold it upwards.
The wiring harness is glued to a plastic frame, which is clipped into the black bezel. Attaching the gearbox is not rocket science, so I'll skip the details on how to disassemble it.
When assembling, it's important to secure the circuit board to the plastic frame; I used hot glue. Since genuine leather is often significantly thicker than the original plastic, use hot glue sparingly and make sure the gear knob sits snugly against the plastic frame.
The wiring harness must not extend below the plastic frame; otherwise, it will not be possible to assemble it. It is recommended to trim approximately 2-3mm from the end of the plastic frame.
