P0380 Error: Glow Plug System Malfunction (Solution)

P0380 relates to the preheating system of diesel engines and is a common error code in VW/Audi/Seat/Cupra/Skoda TDI vehicles. Unlike cylinder-specific glow plug codes (e.g., P0671-P0674), P0380 refers to the entire preheating circuit "A" – usually indicating a problem with the preheating relay, fuse, or wiring.


What does P0380 mean?
The glow plugs preheat the combustion chamber so that the cold diesel fuel can ignite. The engine control unit monitors the glow plug circuit. If it detects a fault in the glow plug circuit (open circuit, short circuit, too high/low current), the code P0380 is set. Since the code refers to the main glow plug circuit, the causes are often central (relay, fuse, control unit) and not due to a single glow plug.


Typical symptoms:
- Engine check light is on.
- Poor cold start performance, especially in winter.
- Long pre-glow / engine cranking when starting.
- Rough engine running shortly after starting.
- White or bluish smoke during cold start.


Most common causes:
- One or more spark plugs have burned out (most common cause).
- Faulty preheating relay / preheating control unit.
- Glow plug system fuse blown.
- Wiring/connectors corroded or damaged (possibly due to rodent gnawing!).
- Glow plug control unit defective (in newer TDI models).


Diagnosis with VCDS:
- Autoscan: P0380 code found in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).
- Perform an output test/actuator diagnosis for the glow plug relay.
- Test each glow plug individually using a multimeter or, preferably, a light bulb (resistance should be approximately 0.5-1 Ohm; a break in the circuit indicates a defect). A sufficient current must flow.
- Check the glow plug system's fuses and relays.
- Measure the voltage at the glow plug connector during preheating.
