P2563 is a modern error code that primarily occurs in newer Common-Rail TDI engines (EA288, from approximately 2012 onwards). It relates to the electric turbocharger variable geometry actuator (VTG actuator), which includes the position sensor G581. Unlike older TDIs with vacuum-operated VTG systems, these newer turbochargers use an electronic servo motor for adjustment.
What does P2563 mean?
The boost pressure control valve (also known as VTG actuator or turbo actuator) reports its position to the engine control unit via the integrated position sensor G581. If the reported position deviates from the expected value, or if the sensor does not provide plausible values, fault code P2563 is set.
Typical symptoms:
- Engine check light is on.
- Spark plug lamp is flashing (emergency mode).
- Loss of power, no noticeable turbocharger boost.
- The vehicle accelerates very slowly.
- Sudden and significant performance drop.
- Runs smoothly at idle, but lacks power under load.
Most common causes:
- Defective electric actuator for the VTG (Variable Track Gauge) system - most common cause.
- Defective position sensor G581 in the actuator (often a single unit with the servo motor).
- VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) mechanism is stiff/coked - Adjustment motor cannot move anymore.
- Wiring/connector to the actuator is corroded or damaged (possibly due to rodent damage!).
- Control unit software error (very rare).
Diagnosis with VCDS:

Autoscan: P2563 in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).
- Actuator diagnosis for turbocharger pressure control valve: Observe the actuator movement.
- Measurement data for G581: Compare the setpoint and actual position of the actuator.
- Check the mechanical resistance of the VTG (verify travel mechanism by manually moving it with the actuator disconnected; if movement is difficult, the actuator may be hard to position correctly...).
For newer vehicles (from the Golf 7 onwards), check if there is still a warranty or goodwill coverage. This problem is known and affects many EA288 engines.
