P2101 Error: Throttle Actuator Failure (Solution)

Error code P2101, faulty throttle valve control unit (VAG TSI/TFSI): Causes and diagnosis.

P2101 refers to the throttle actuator (J338) in gasoline engines (TSI/TFSI). The control unit detects a fault in the throttle control system - the throttle valve does not reach the requested position. Often, cleaning and recalibration are sufficient.


What does P2101 mean?
The J338 throttle control regulates the airflow to the engine and reports the current position. If the actual position deviates from the desired target position, or if the position signal is implausible, the code P2101 is set. The cause may be a faulty control unit, but it could also be a dirty throttle valve that has become mechanically difficult to move.


Typical symptoms:
- Engine check light is on.
- Power loss / Emergency mode
- Uneven idle speed.
- Jerky acceleration.
- Engine stalls at idle.


Most common causes:
- Throttle valve is dirty/carbonized and sticking (most common cause).
- Throttle valve actuator J338 is defective.
- Throttle body not calibrated (after removal/battery replacement).
- Wiring/connector is corroded or damaged.
- Vacuum/intake system leak.


Diagnosis with VCDS:
- Autoscan: P2101 code found in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).

- Actuator diagnosis: Open/close the throttle valve and observe actual values.
- Drosselklappe ausbauen und reinigen
- After cleaning/pairing, clear the error memory and re-check.
