I've been experiencing a 'sawing' noise for some time now, but only when starting the machine when it's only partially warm.
Could it be that the starter ring gear isn't disengaging quickly enough?
I hadn't really paid much attention to it before, but I heard it yesterday on a TDI Golf III in the neighborhood.
I think I've read something about the magnetic switch before, which might need to be replaced.
Can someone provide more details (I know it's difficult to describe sounds accurately). I would still be very grateful for any advice, before the starter motor potentially gives up, even though it probably isn't the problem!
I had the same issue with my Golf 3 1Z engine. It was a kind of roaring sound after starting the engine when it was warm.
During my engine replacement, I simply relocated the starter motor without making any changes. Since then, it hasn't been working. Perhaps you should try removing the starter motor and lubricating or greasing the magnetic switch.
If it's constantly rotating, that certainly isn't an advantage in terms of durability.
I know several Golf 3 TDIs that have this problem. It seems to be a common issue.
