"There's nothing adjustable on this injector, but simply replacing the nozzle without adjusting the opening pressure can cause the engine to knock because it might lead to after-injection in that cylinder. If even the smallest piece of debris gets inside, it can cause the injectors to seize, which will sound like a broken connecting rod bearing."
The pressure is adjusted using washers of varying thicknesses, which are located at the very back of the upper part of the nozzle holder and pre-tension the spring to a greater or lesser extent. In practice, this looks like this:
- Disassemble the nozzle holder, remove the old nozzle, insert the new one, and reassemble.
- Check the opening pressure (you'll need a testing device for this). If it's incorrect, disassemble again, remove the spring, and carefully pry out the shim.
- If the pressure is too low, use a thicker shim; if it's too high, use a thinner one. As a general rule for my VW injector holders, a difference of 0.05mm in shim thickness results in approximately 3 bar of pressure change.
- Assemble the nozzle holder with a torque of 70 Nm.
- After a test run, if the injector holder is leaking, you have to take everything out again and tighten the injector holder with 100 Nm or so (which isn't supposed to be done, but I do it anyway). If it's still leaking, disassemble it again, lap the conical washer on a glass plate using 1200 grit sandpaper with oil, as well as the mating surfaces in the injector holder. Rinse everything thoroughly and reassemble *grrr*. And then hope that it's finally sealed...
