Hello everyone,
I could use some help with installing a car radio.
It's a Volkswagen Polo 6N, first registered in June 1998. Built-in VW radio ALPHA.
I would like to install a car radio with ISO connectors.
The problem:
There are several adapters available to convert from VW to ISO.
Once, only pins 4 and 7 are swapped (approximately 3 EUR).
There's also something called a 'phantom power supply' for the antenna, which costs around 30 EUR.
Question:
What does that mean?
How do I figure out which one I need?
Thank you very much.
Best regards, Jürgen. |

Hi,
You basically need both.
Phantom power is for the amplifier in the antenna.
You can discard the other adapter if you are able to/want to swap the two wires. If not, then you'll need the adapter as well.
Most of the time, at well-known stores like Promarkt and MediaMarkt, they sell a nice package where both components are already pre-wired together.
Best regards, Andy. |

Sure, here's the translation:
'First of all, thank you!'
Swapping the two wires is not a problem.
Just one more question to clarify something:
Do VW car radios have this phantom power feature built-in, while ISO radios do not, is that correct? |

Okay... but with my 6N, I didn't have the antenna amplifier cable connected. Try plugging it in; then the amplifier will become visible, and you can disconnect it from the antenna cable and simply plug it into the radio. "It usually had a connection, although not the best, but it worked. However, you can connect the adapter yourself if you're already replacing the cables; as far as I remember, it connects to the remote port." |
