Hi, I'm back again.
"Unfortunately, I've recently started hearing a kind of noise from the front left side when accelerating strongly. You only hear it when the window is closed; when you open it and try to listen, you can't hear anything. I've carefully inspected all the intercooler pipes and couldn't find any leaks. At least, I can say that I don't see any oil leaking anywhere. I suspect that the intercooler might be leaking."
Which LLK (liquid cooling modules) are compatible with the AFN engine without requiring any major modifications? Are only those from the Golf 3 compatible, or also those from the Golf 4?
Greetings.
Reuselkopp.

The G4 has the "bag" (presumably referring to a storage compartment or similar) located to the right of the wheel, while the G3 has it located to the left.
This suggests that nothing will fit properly. Any curvature of the connectors, etc., will be reversed.

Hi Dieselmartin,
So, am I understanding correctly that only an LLK (liquid-cooled intercooler) from a 1Z or AFN engine, which was originally installed in the G3, will fit? Nothing from an Ibi (Ibiza) or Audi 80, or anything like that...

Well,
With a locksmith apprenticeship in your pocket, you'll definitely be able to get into any LLK (likely referring to a specific type of establishment or organization).
However, even with the 1Z model, I doubt it's a simple plug-and-play solution, because, as far as I know, the AFN and 1Z models have different part numbers for the coolant.
(The Ibiza 6K GP01 (like the one Jan has) has the LLK [low-temperature coolant] under the transmission, so it's something different again compared to the left-right arrangement between the G3 and G4 models.)
Before you ask, all the 3C Passats have a front radiator, but they all have a different one.

@ dieselmartin
You probably mean that all new Passat (3C) models have a side-mounted catalytic converter. The 3BG with 74 kW has one located on the side, in front of the driver's side wheel well, and the 130 HP model as well, as far as I know. I wonder if those would fit on a G3?

I strongly disagree with that! There's no space under the transmission, and the catalytic converter is located in the usual spot on the front left, as it should be for a G3 (I actually had to clean it just the other day with a garden hose, removing a bunch of dead flies). However, the engine doesn't know that; it's a Golf 4 engine, with inlets and outlets on the right side, so all the pipes have to go around or over the engine... a truly ingenious design.
The air intake located in the center, underneath the car, is designed to allow air to flow to the oil pan and then upwards towards the turbocharger.
Best regards,
Jan.

Hm,
I could consider a combination of using a lower gear and shifting to a smaller front gear.
"Because the fresh air intake is located at the bottom of the black plastic housing. Buildings G3 and G4 have it 'one floor higher', where building 6K has the NSW (presumably a specific system or equipment)."
Do you have any photos? I'll have to search for them.
I'm familiar with the drain plugs for the turbo and the transmission.

Hi,

I could go for a combination of bottom gear and front gear.
|
I not .
I don't have any pictures of that part readily available (but I can take some if you don't believe me), but the LLK (low-temperature coolant cooler) is definitely located in front of the left front wheel, and it's positioned so far outward that about half of it is directly in front of the wheel arch. The transmission, on the other hand, is located between the left front wheel and the engine block, a good distance behind the inner end of the LLK.
The entrance is indeed at the very bottom, but the upper level (LLK) is "half a floor" higher.
Immediately below the gearbox, you'll find the plastic tray.
Best regards,
Jan.

Guys, don't get upset!
I performed another visual and pressure test today, and my intercooler is completely leak-free. The culprit is the hose connecting the plastic pipe to the intake manifold. There's a two-centimeter tear in the hose, and it was blowing air out like a hairdryer. I short-circuited the turbocharger control directly to the vacuum pump and kept the engine running at approximately 1600 RPM using a piece of wood. It's really amazing how much air was escaping; you couldn't see the leak from the outside. Fortunately, it's just the hose and not the intercooler itself. Well... I'm not sure what the dealership will charge for the hose.
Hoffentlich habe ich meinem Lader nicht geschadet da ich nicht weiß wie lange ich schon mit dem Riss unterwegs bin. Look at this! / Just look! / Take a look!

Reuselkopp.

Sure, here's the translation:
"ne" translates to "right?" or "isn't it?" in English. It's a common tag question used to seek confirmation or agreement.
Nobody seems to mind. It's just a technical discussion, not a fight for life or death.
And Jan should really know better, because he keeps that thing within easy reach in the garage (or wherever).
I was so sure because, back then, I spent ages looking for the darn LLK on the 6K GP01 ASV from my colleague. And then I saw the elaborate piping .
The flat, elongated shape also suggests that it is located "underneath" or "in front of" the gearbox.
The last, ultimate hope would be that Jans' NL-Ibiza has a different type of lubricating grease than the German one I had in my hands .
It's a possible indication that the LLK (likely referring to a specific component) might not be located in front of the wheel – at least, not in the ASV (likely referring to a specific model or type) that I'm familiar with.

Don't worry, this is a technical discussion, not something to get upset about.
Unfortunately, it was only on the street, which made it difficult to photograph in detail, and taking it apart wouldn't be much fun.
I was digging around in my photos again, and I actually found something interesting.
"vor dem Getriebe" kann man damit durchaus bestaetigen, darunter natuerlich nicht. Da der LLK etwa 25 cm breit ist, bedeutet "vor dem Getriebe" aber zugleich auch "vor dem Rad". But see for yourselves.
Best regards,
Jan.

OK.
Then I had misunderstood the word "unter".
But does it go deeper than just the transmission, right?
His exhaust stream actually flows out from underneath the transmission - that's the "underneath" part that I could remember.
We are a few, and he's a bit of a troublemaker, he doesn't fit .

Hi,
I just added a fourth picture above... in case you were too quick .
Quote: |
But does it go deeper than just the transmission, right?
|
Not really. From memory, I would say they are roughly the same distance. The rectangular recess in the lower right corner of the photo of the floor pan is exactly where the LLK (likely referring to a component) is located – it's hidden by a separate plastic part. If you look from the bottom rear, you can see about half of the LLK from the back. The other half can be seen from the wheel arch.
Quote: |
His exhaust stream actually flows out from underneath the transmission – that's what was "underneath," which is what I remembered.
|
That might work; it's likely that the right-hand inlet is intended for that purpose, as it should generate a significant amount of vacuum. However, there isn't much space between the transmission and the bottom pan.
Best regards,
Jan.
