Brakes on the Golf 3

Hi,
I drive a Golf 3 TDI 81kw, manufactured in 1998, and I'm not entirely satisfied with the braking performance.
The TÜV (German technical inspection) already flagged the brake discs during the last inspection (45,000 km), so that I am now (60,000 km) considering replacing them.
I would like to replace the brake discs and pads, and (for the first time) the brake fluid, both at the front and rear.
Now my question:
Are there accessories like discs and pads that are better than the ones from VW but don't cost much more? What does this cost me in total?
