DeThe engine is losing water somewhere (possibly through the pressure relief valve?).
I've read quite a bit about head gasket problems with this engine... has anyone else experienced the same issue? What other potential causes are there?

Hello.
It is normal for the coolant temperature indicator not to move. The temperature must be above...
The temperature reaches 110°C, causing the indicator to move away from the 90-degree mark.
The temperature gauge indicates a reading of 90°C (engine temperature), which is within the range of 75°C to 110°C.
I need to use a VAG-COM or VAG-tester and check the coolant temperature readings.
Read the meter readings.
I have an AJM engine myself. I drove with it for a long time at 95°C because the thermostat wasn't working correctly. I only realized this when I checked the temperature using VAG-COM.
Regards,
Christian.

But it can't be the thermostat, because if it were, the temperature would exceed 110 degrees! The problem is that water is being lost.

Hi!
I have an AJM Bora and I've been to the workshop four times due to coolant loss.
The causes in my case:
1. The head gasket is slightly damaged.
2. Leaks detected in the three glow plugs.
Finally, the big problem: After a highway drive at approximately 180 km/h over a distance of 50 km, the warning light came on indicating that coolant needed to be refilled. Just before the trip, I had picked up the vehicle from the workshop (for the third time).
After I vented my frustration, it turned out that the car wasn't switching from the small to the large cooling circuit, and the emergency valve had blown all the coolant into the engine compartment. It was due to a thermostat, which is probably responsible for controlling this switchover.

Okay, I'll just go ahead and replace the thermostat; it's not a big deal.

Hello? Don't buy a new one right away. Take the part out, put it in a pot of water on the stove, and see if the bimetal still works! It's best to put a suitable thermometer in there so you can tell when it opens.
"It could save money. Besides, such extreme water loss through the pressure relief valve should be detectable somehow, even if you stop immediately; for example, you could feel the engine cover insulation when the light comes on. Otherwise, a faulty head gasket is still a possibility."

Yes, I don't actually think it's the thermostat, but I'll check it anyway. The pressure relief valve runs down the side of the tank, right?

hello
WAs I said, it is not burned by the engine, but escapes due to excessive pressure in the cooling system.Lsystem. You probably also have that strange gurgling sound 'somewhere in the dashboard' - that's the air in the cooling system, which you can hear in the heat exchanger. I hope I could help a little, even though I would have preferred to write something positive. It's likely that the head gasket is only damaged in one specific area, and the oil and water have remained separate for over 15,000 km now.
Best regards.

Okay, I was actually expecting a cylinder head problem. Now, if it's not a manufacturing defect, is there at least a 'reinforced' head gasket available? Or would a head gasket from another engine fit?

'Based on my own experience with the 115hp TDI engine (MKB AJM), I can say that at around 160,000 km, I first experienced occasional coolant loss. Eventually, the temperature gauge started fluctuating slightly. The workshop then replaced the thermostat after inspection, as it was no longer functioning properly, which also affected the operation of the radiator fans. At just under 182,000 km, the head gasket failed. Since then, the car has run for another approximately 55,000 km without any problems.'

Does anyone know off the top of their head where the thermostat is located on the engine?

I believe "Kopfdichtung" also had two similar cases in the Bora and the Passat.
Symptoms like the ones you described. Every time, it was a headache.
Regarding the thermostat, I would check it when the engine is warm.
touch the upper and lower radiator hoses; if the lower one is cold, you should...
Think about the thermostat for a moment.

Hello Master 328,
My AJM Golf also needed coolant this August. We were on a vacation trip to the Fichtelgebirge mountains. The road was clear, so I accelerated uphill and downhill, reaching speeds that would have been impossible without the nice long 6th gear. The car is from 1999, with approximately 160,000 km (about 100,000 miles) on it. It has had an Oettinger chip installed since around 130,000 km (80,000 miles), increasing the horsepower to 140 PS.
I had a vacuum in the cooling system; whenever the engine requested water, I would quickly pull over to the right, unscrew the expansion tank, and suddenly the pink coolant would reappear. Then I could drive for about a week. In September, the head gasket was replaced, and now my AJM engine no longer requests water. I had the repair done at my current independent garage (formerly a VW dealership), and it cost me approximately 482 EUR.
Best regards.
Frank.
