Regarding VTG:
I used to think the same thing for a long time (although VW and all the technical literature have always claimed otherwise)... take a look under the hood... Unfortunately, it's not actually a VTG turbocharger. There's only a pressure sensor there that actuates a rod connected to the wastegate. You can clearly see it from below, and even from above, you can tell by the position and size of the pressure sensor that it's not a VTG turbocharger if you're familiar with these designs.
You probably don't necessarily need variable valve timing (VTG) either, if you look at the torque curve.

Regards,

Olaf.

P.S.
I've seen it with my own eyes on vehicles from the years 2000 and 2003, and I've read about it countless times (although I've only read about it a couple of times in articles written by incompetent automotive journalists who claimed it had a VTG). In those articles, there were usually other errors as well. The risk of confusion exists because the engines from the 3L have a 12-inch turbocharger with a variable geometry turbine (VTG), while the AMF has a 15-inch turbocharger (from Garrett, likely the GT series) without a VTG.
VTG was allegedly discontinued for cost-saving reasons.

"Hmm, I'm not very familiar with all these chargers; this is my first TDI. So, I probably ended up with one of those three magazines. What's the difference in torque characteristics between a wastegate and a VTG? Are there any comparisons for the SAME engines?"
UWhat are the differences?

Take care.

Dirk.

VW probably knows the exact differences between the "same" engine. However, the 1.2 TDI from the 3L gives you a general idea. Nevertheless, the turbo lag can be significantly improved with a good chip tuning, albeit at the expense of emissions during startup (be careful, there are significant differences in the tuning of these chips).
The wastegate doesn't allow the turbocharger to reach full boost pressure as early.
Regarding maintenance, it's a component located in the exhaust area that is prone to soot buildup and experiences significant temperature fluctuations.
The wastegate valve is mechanically much simpler.
The underlying cause of the problem on my end hasn't been clarified yet. However, it's clear that Jörg (Weimann) likely has a different issue, or perhaps no issue at all (the car initially went into emergency mode).

Regards,

Olaf.

Hello,
'Boost pressure regulation limit exceeded' means that, for a certain period of time (the duration of which is unknown), the actual boost pressure is more than 200 mbar below the target boost pressure .

The information about the 200 mbar is very interesting. The wastegate with the rod and can opens to the left (or Olaf?). In right-hand turns, it wants to stay open, so the spring needs to be engaged.
More feathering (less aggressive response), so a lighter wastegate with a rod?
Drive slower?
Well, I guess so.
