Hello,

As a newcomer here, I'd like to immediately ask for your help with a small problem.

My wife's Golf 4 starts to produce a lot of black smoke when accelerating hard, above approximately 3000 rpm, then loses power and eventually goes into limp mode.

My logical conclusion was that there was too much fuel and not enough air.

I then read the error codes and came across error code 17964.

I'm not entirely sure where I should be looking for the problem. As a non-expert, I suspect it might be related to the VTG adjustment and/or leaks in the pressure system.

I have performed LOG runs with gear ratios of 3-8-10 and 8-11, but I'm getting a bit stuck when analyzing the results. The maximum pressure delivered by the sensor is 1930 mbar. In measurement block 11, there are significant differences (under load) between the two pressure values, particularly at engine speeds of 2500-3000 rpm.

I have already performed a visual inspection of the pressure system. Due to the unusual hose couplings (I believe they are called the Henn system), it is quite difficult to pressure test the system with the resources available to me.

I would be happy to provide the log files if anyone wants to take a look at them.

Perhaps someone here has a suggestion on how I should approach this problem.
Osern would then be saved icon_wink.gif.

Thank you very much.

Hi,
The year of manufacture and the engine code would be helpful. The unprocessed log files would also be useful.
In the meantime, you can also start searching for error 17964 here.

Hello Frank,

I have disposed of the uploaded data junk. Herbert had written:

Apart from that, I wonder why the purchased software (VCDS-RKS in German) isn't simply being used. Please install and use the correct software.

You most likely have a leak in the turbocharger pressure system, or the EGR valve is not sealing properly against the exhaust manifold.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello.

and thank you for your help.
Due to the error and various posts in this forum, my troubleshooting focused on the possibility of a leak in the intercooler system.

The engine in question is a 2001 ARL model in a Golf 4, and it is unmodified.

I'm afraid I'll have to perform a pressure test on the system.
Unfortunately, it's not very easy to achieve a proper seal with these stupid couplings.

The AGR (Abgasrückführung) system was completely disassembled and cleaned. Opening the AGR valve manually requires considerable force. The AGR valve was "deactivated" by disconnecting the vacuum hose.
Behavior remains.

I've noticed that on a hose (located at the front left bottom of the vehicle, near the power steering), a portion of the fitting has become damaged, and there are also clear marks on the clamp. Is it possible that this fitting could open under load?

Best regards,

I also experienced clutch problems with my ARL.
The aluminum deforms very quickly, and the connections are no longer properly aligned.
Someone had the idea to use cable ties to hold things together, and it worked really well for me.
Are there any oil mist residues visible at the points where they are connected, or anywhere else?
VTG is a good idea, and I would investigate it using the well-known method, if I were you.
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"MFG" is an abbreviation for "Mit freundlichen Grüßen," which means "Sincerely" or "Best regards" in English.

Hello,

Yes, connectors tend to loosen if there is any play in them. You can prevent them from loosening further or repeatedly by reducing the play in the connections, for example, by using additional O-rings or cable ties.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi,
The conclusion
Quote:
too much fuel/not enough air
is probably already heading in the right direction when it comes to black smoke.
The next symptom is indicated by error code 17694, "Pressure difference too low," meaning insufficient boost pressure for the amount of air being drawn in. Considering that the engine's power output is determined based on the amount of air being drawn in, a leak on the intake side is likely. A problem with the turbocharger or variable geometry turbocharger (VTG) seems less probable, given the observation of black smoke.
It would be much clearer if you looked at the logs for air mass, fuel injection volume, and boost pressure under load.
Please copy the log files here as they are, in their original and unedited form!

Good morning, and first of all, thank you for the suggestion... I don't know if I'll be able to get to the car today... somehow, family plans have come up icon_wink.gif.

I'll probably get back to it tomorrow, and my wife isn't unhappy about having to drive my car.

Best regards,

Me again...

I would like to thank everyone involved for finding a solution... the kitten is purring again and has its claws back.

The cause was a pressure pipe (the plastic part) that had cracked precisely at the weld seam, over a length of approximately 10 cm. Unfortunately, it was only detectable under pressure, and even then, it was very difficult to identify because the applied pressure would simply disappear without any obvious signs... After disassembling the entire pressure system and individually testing all the components, the fault was found and corrected.

Thank you for the suggestions.
