Because, in most cases, only a very small number of people experience problems with it.

Am I correct in assuming that you don't have the original wheels and tires on the car?

Hello.

Yes, you are correct. I have Golf 4 R32 rims on, size 7.5x18, with tires of size 225/40/18.

Typical problem. The ESP configuration is naturally optimized for the standard tire size. While the OZ R32 wheels are also a standard option, they are not included with your specific model, and the R32 has a very unique ESP configuration.

Hello.

Is it not advisable to have the ESP system on my Golf coded in the same way as it is on the R32?

No, because firstly, your TDI has a different behavior, and secondly, it has a different (smaller) braking system. As I said, switching to "off-road" mode is essentially the customer service solution for problems like the ones you're describing.

Okay, I upgraded the brake system on my car from 288x25mm to 312x25mm in the front because the braking performance was really bad. Maybe the improved braking performance is due to the upgraded brake system, or do you also need to recode a larger brake system in the front?

It might have been helpful to mention the modifications (brakes and wheels) right away when discussing this problem. icon_confused.gif

Hello.

"Yes, I was just thinking the same thing. Sorry, I completely forgot about the modified brake system. Should anything else be coded? I inquired about the brake booster back then, and I was told that it's exactly the same in the larger system, and that I should be able to upgrade the brake system without any problems."

Sorry again for not mentioning this at the beginning.

The braking system has nothing to do with the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) interventions; this is due to the changed tire sizes. A 312x25 braking system is, in terms of coding, identical to a 288x25 system, so no change is necessary or advisable.

For your information, the R32 uses a 2FN 42 17" (PR-1ZT) brake caliper, which has dimensions of 334x32. This caliper has 2 pistons, unlike the FN3 54 15"/16" (PR-1LE/1LJ/1LN/1LQ/1LT/1ZD/1ZE/1ZH) that is currently installed on your vehicle, which only has 1 piston.

Everything is 10 inches, so it's irrelevant.

I don't think you need to do any more recoding. However, I'm not really an expert on this (Sebastian would be the right person to ask). How does the ABS react when it intervenes? For example, if you have full grip on the left side and very little on the right, the ABS needs to ensure that your vehicle doesn't swerve to the left. If it does that and regulates the braking as expected during a full stop, then I would leave it as it is.

Sure, here's the translation:

"Just for your information:"
Does the ESP still intervene even if your vehicle drifts into a curve, or is it no longer possible to trigger its activation?
Reason for my question: My ESP might intervene a bit later, but I don't want to completely disable it. Would remapping it to a "sportier" setting be considered a modification of a normally functioning ESP system?

Best regards,
Tom.

Hello.

"However, the ESP is working, but since I had it reprogrammed, it seems to activate only when it's supposed to. Now, the tires are already starting to squeal."

In my opinion, the ABS is working optimally. I performed two full emergency stops yesterday and didn't notice anything indicating that the vehicle pulled to one side or anything like that.

When using a suspension system designed for rough terrain, the engagement happens later, which makes the whole process feel less abrupt.

The squealing of tires is not necessarily an indication of reaching the limit of grip; it can vary greatly depending on temperature, brand, and model, making it an unreliable indicator.

I meant that the ESP works as it should when the car is about to lose control.

"Before, it was really bad, especially in a left-hand curve. If I didn't take the curve too aggressively, it would already start pulling, but this wasn't the case in right-hand curves. Since the road condition coding was implemented, everything seems to be fine again, I'd say."

When using a suspension system designed for rough terrain, the engagement occurs later, which makes the overall experience less jarring.

@sebastian: So, then I'll reprogram it and try it out sometime.

@everyone: How can it only be noticeable when turning left? Does that mean there's still a difference between the left and right sides now? Did they just raise the limit? I don't quite understand that.

According to the vehicle identification number, you have a Passat. This model does not use a Conti/Teves MK60 ABS system, but rather a Bosch 5.3 or 5.7 system, which does not offer any of those "options."

That's exactly the problem described in the KD solution - if I remember correctly, it was described there as being related to the alignment of the powertrain.

Or simply by having a different maximum steering angle to the right and left, meaning that if the car is not perfectly straight when the steering system is in its neutral position?
