I can rule out contact problems; although the device is located in a somewhat inconvenient area, all the connectors are in excellent condition.
I can't access the control unit; it's as if it doesn't exist. I have checked the coding of the body control module.
Please tell me, so I don't misunderstand what you mean.

Hello Matthias,

Do you have the ability to view the CAN bus using a CAN analyzer?
One could check the communication between the servo and steering angle sensors, etc.
Best regards, Jochen.

Okay... it seems like that thing is finished.

QUESTION:

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a replacement part cheaply, as the car will then be traded in to a dealer?

Hello everyone!

Bringing this topic back from the depths of the forum because I've been given a vehicle with exactly the same problem that Matthias described.

Okay, bitte gib mir den deutschen Text, den du Ăźbersetzt haben mĂśchtest.
Polo 9N, 1.4 16V, manual transmission, manufactured around 2002, mileage approximately 46,950 km.
Error: The MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) for steering assist is illuminated continuously, and there is no power steering assistance.
Fault memory address 44: 01309 - Steering assist control unit (J500): 37-00- malfunction.
EDIT: The error cannot be deleted and reappears immediately!
Part number of the steering column: 6Q0 423 156 K "Power steering KYO X 908".
Encoding: 00110

According to the customer's description, the rear silencer/muffler was replaced on the vehicle, and the problem has existed since then. The workshop that performed the repair claims that the "MIL" (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) had already been illuminated previously, while the customer claims the opposite.

So far, the battery has been installed and removed, strip fuses for power supply have been checked for corrosion, various connectors in and around the power steering pump have been inspected: Everything is okay.
The measured values from the StG 44 can be read out and appear to be plausible. The exception is the target and actual rotational speeds of the power steering pump, which remain constantly fixed at 0 RPM.

BUT: I've noticed that the encoding is incorrect!
In my opinion, it should actually be "11210" (according to Sebastian's openobd.org). However, the encoding cannot be changed because whenever I try to save it (regardless of which digit is modified), the communication breaks down. Subsequently, the encoding "00110" is displayed again.

Okay, here are my questions:
@MatthiasViewing profile: Matthias: What was your part number for the StG (Steuergerät) with address 44 back then? How was it encoded in the vehicle, and did the encoding match?
@everyone: Has anyone ever taken the time to disassemble this device, remove the circuit board, and investigate what might actually be causing the problem?

Thank you for your information!

Best regards from Munich!

Hello DieselBär30x,

I had the same problem with the steering assist unit "J500" being defective.

I disassembled the thing (unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures) and had to find out that the electric motor was defective. So, a new power steering unit is needed, costing icon_smile.gif €624 icon_evil.gif.

Best regards,

Wow... that was a while ago. I'm sure I saved that as a text file on my laptop. I'll take a look, promise.

Hello everyone!

Thank you very much for your answers so far! icon_wink.gif

But if the power steering pump unit displays "J500 fault" when the engine is defective, then we're probably going to have a hard time getting it repaired...

Let's see if Matthias finds anything else icon_cool.gif.

Best regards from Munich!

Hello everyone!

Thank you again for the previous responses, but this issue is – at least from my perspective – resolved for now.

"...takes too long...too expensive...blah blah blah..."

Now, after questioning, we are trying out "{my(pants)Hammer}" icon_confused.gif.

So, once again, a huge THANK YOU for your information!

Best regards from Munich!
