it's not just the timing chain driving the camshaft that creates the bright, unpleasant sound in my ears on the R5 TDIs. The crankshaft housing is made entirely of aluminum, which transmits and dampens vibrations differently, creating the characteristic sound together with the gear drive. The V10 engine has, at least, a crankshaft housing made of gray cast iron. All other TDIs have gray cast iron crankshaft housings.
