It's not just the timing chain driving the camshaft that bothers me.

made of aluminum, which redirects and dampens the vibrations differently, resulting in a bright and clear sound.
along with the wheel drive. The V10 engine, at least, has a gray cast iron bearing housing.
All other TDIs have a cast iron crankcase.

I hadn't even thought of that, because I didn't know. It sounds really plausible.
