Can you give me some advice on which workshops I could contact to find out the mileage of a car? Volkswagen dealerships are very reluctant to provide this information, and independent mechanics also don't really want to help when you ask.

I think you'll have to search for a long time; not many people do that.

Hello!
Can't the actual mileage or corresponding data be read out using VAG-COM?

Yes, from an EDC15.
For ECUs like the EDC16, programming is typically done either via an EEPROM programmer or, using more expensive equipment, through the OBD port.
What kind of vehicle are we talking about?

Hello!
Initially, I was just considering purchasing a VCDS (Vag-Com) device. The more useful applications this tool has, the more interested I am in it.
I would also use this before buying a used car. To list a few vehicle types that are of interest to me:
T4 5Zyl. TDI.
T5 TDI engines.
Audi C4, approximately 1996/1997.
Current A6 models.
LT2 4-cylinder TDI.
Crafter.
Do you need a different interface to determine the actual mileage? If so, perhaps it would be better to acquire one.

VAG-COM / VCDS is a diagnostic tool .
It's amusing that some ECUs offer the gimmick of displaying mileage.
But that's all there is to it.
"Firstly, many ECUs do not record the mileage, and secondly, people can..."
that are capable of manipulating the speedometers of current vehicles and also altering entries in the vehicle's electronic control units (ECUs).

Okay, understood.
I always thought that being read-only didn't necessarily mean it couldn't be manipulated.
Where can I find information about which vehicles VAG-COM can read the mileage from?

I don't know of any openings.
Okay, let's assume that for most EDC15V engines (specifically, the 90 or 110 horsepower TDI models from the years 2000 to...
(referring to the year 2004). Everything else is a matter of luck, as it's usually not specified.
AFAIK, EDC16 is generally not supported.

That's not entirely accurate. With vehicles that have an EDC16 engine control unit, it's common to simply tamper with the speedometer because there are currently very few devices that can do so via the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) port.
Opening an EDC16 and doing the whole process "manually" is quite time-consuming, so someone like "Hinterhoftachodreher" would probably prefer not to do it.
The vehicles listed are mostly quite old, so the condition is probably more important than the mileage.
The current A6 not only records the mileage in the instrument cluster (KI) and multi-function display (MSG), but also .

Your word in Otto's ear canal.
Quote: | Now you can read the EEPROM of an EDC16 via OBDII; you can also extract the security access code via OBDII.
From MED9x/EDC16, you can verify the actual mileage of the vehicle that is stored within the EDC16/MED9 system.
You can change the odometer value in EDC16 engine control units... and do all of this via OBDII! |
and the tool is quite widespread .

Not only the A6 .

I don't think we should be discussing alternative, cheaper, or better programs here, as manipulating the engine performance of a car doesn't belong in this forum and is also quite unethical.
