The climate control and radio are working, but they are also flickering. I suspect that the brightness, like the instruments, is also controlled by the AI electronics.
The headlights are working normally. Also, the engine control unit is not affected by power outages. The car is running normally.

I've now found someone in an A3 forum who has identified a faulty chip on the AI control board. Most likely, the bonding wires have broken. You can simulate the fault using cold spray.

I contacted VDO, even though the manufacturer of my keyless entry system is Jäger. I'm looking for a loaner or replacement device to test whether the problem is resolved with a different unit. If that's clear, I can still buy one, or have a replacement device linked (immobilizer).
Or how else would one obtain the 7-digit code? Is there now a consumer law that requires Audi to release this information to private individuals as well?

Hi,

Since this issue is really starting to get on my nerves, but spending almost 400 euros on a new instrument cluster is too much, I decided to check the used parts market (eBay).
My instrument cluster has the part number: 8L0 920 900.
Used ones can occasionally be found, but they often have a letter in the last position.
8L0 920 900 K

Is this compatible, and should a workshop be able to program the WFS?
There are often contradictory statements online regarding different generations of immobilizer systems, etc.

A dealer told me that he would have to try it out, but he didn't want to commit.

Thank you and best regards.

Hello,

The matter was resolved in a satisfactory and relatively inexpensive manner.
"Purchased a used combination instrument from a well-known auction house (ending in the letter 'K') for 60 euros, plus had it installed and calibrated at the dealership for 45 euros."
Everything is working again now.

Note on the margin: Initially, he wanted 87 EUR. However, he couldn't provide a reasonable explanation for why the diagnostic equipment was billed for 102 minutes (just over an hour), even though the car was driven into the workshop at 8:55 AM and was back in the yard at 9:40 AM, and the mechanics were still having breakfast at 9:00 AM. If I hadn't waited there, I would have definitely been scammed.

However, the mileage reading cannot be changed (instead of 204,000 km, it now shows 67,000 km on the odometer). No one mentioned it, and I believe that altering the mileage is not yet a crime, but rather that failing to disclose a changed mileage during a sale is what constitutes the offense, right?
Let's see what the next technical inspection says.

Definitely, thank you for the tips; I'm now a lot wiser and a little less poor icon_smile.gif.

Sure, here's the translation:

It is a crime, and the practice of boasting during sales has been outdated for quite some time icon_lol.gif icon_wink.gif.

I see it the same way. It is not a recording in the sense of §268 of the German Criminal Code -- Unfortunately.

http://www.asp.sachsen-anhalt.de/presseapp/data/pdhbs/2003/001_2003.htm

In the past, defective mechanical odometers were replaced with new ones that showed 0 km, without any record of the previous mileage.

"However, I would recommend having the mileage on the new odometer adjusted to match the actual mileage of the vehicle, so that you don't even feel tempted to..."

Anyone who believes that adjusting the mileage of a used car to match the vehicle's actual mileage already constitutes a criminal offense is mistaken.

Um. That was considered outdated back in 2005, but it had already been considered obsolete for a long time. Your judgment in the link is from 2003.

§ 22b Abuse of distance counters and speed limiters.
(1) Anyone who does the following shall be punished with imprisonment for up to one year or with a fine:

1. The measurement of a vehicle's odometer is manipulated by influencing the device or the measurement process, thereby altering the result of the measurement.

2. renders the proper function of a speed limiter, with which a motor vehicle is equipped, inoperative or impairs its function by acting upon this device, or

3. prepares for a criminal offense as described in points 1 or 2 by creating, acquiring, selling, or transferring computer programs designed to commit such an offense.

(2) In the cases referred to in paragraph 1, item 3, § 149 paragraphs 2 and 3 of the Criminal Code shall apply mutatis mutandis.
(3) Items to which the offense referred to in paragraph 1 applies may be confiscated. Section 74a of the Criminal Code applies.icon_evil.gif

etc. etc. One can try to get out of it again by removing the speedometer. Ultimately, it's the same thing. And either way, it doesn't belong here or should be supported. http://www.asp.sachsen-anhalt.de/presseapp/data/pdhbs/2003/001_2003.htm

Of course not, but neither should one spread falsehoods. If you carefully read the current legal texts with understanding, you will discover what they are about and the difference between an honest repair and abuse.

We're talking about a repair using a refurbished AI unit, which is a replacement part where the original... The vehicle's mileage should be recorded, and in some cases, it even must be.

The mileage at the time of the change is recorded in the service booklet, which provides irrefutable proof. The mileage displayed on any instrument cluster in the car must no longer be adjusted. Go to a VW dealership, and you'll notice that 90% of the dealers and their mechanics will refuse to do it.

Whether you call it 'thorough review' or 'honest repair or abuse,' you can always twist things to suit your narrative. Written words are patient. However, a court will likely view it as manipulation. Whether you see it that way or continue to handle things with 'honest repairs' is irrelevant to me. icon_wink.gif I adhere to the legal texts, and most others do too.

And everything else belongs in a speedometer-modifying forum.

Right, but only for the purpose of misuse.

They do that with every new AI. They would do the same for a used car, if they could, provided that the original defective part is still in the vehicle.

Me too. However, one should also understand them properly, or ask a qualified legal expert who is familiar with the matter.

To calm things down a bit: It's about increasing the mileage..

I am not aware of any case where something like that would constitute a crime.

VW can and will also adjust the real-world mileage of new electric vehicles (with under 100 km on the odometer) when they are exchanged. That is, at least, what the relevant instructions stipulate.

Please be mindful when discussing mileage readings, and consider whether someone is trying to reduce or increase the reading. Avoid automatically dismissing every request as inherently malicious or a criminal act.

Regarding vdk's question: Misrepresenting the actual mileage is considered a punishable offense. However, the actual mileage is only relevant when determining the vehicle's value (for example, during a sale, insurance claim, etc.). In normal road traffic or during the main vehicle inspection (MOT), the mileage is irrelevant.

The TÜV (German technical inspection authority) is only interested in the number displayed by the AI (artificial intelligence system) and records it in the inspection report. Even if you point out that the vehicle actually has a higher mileage, he will not be interested and will not be willing to record the higher, actual mileage in the inspection report. (I personally experienced this after swapping an engine with one that had MFA and 120,000 km less mileage).

Mullemaus wrote:
The change is recorded in the service booklet with the old/current mileage, and this provides a clear and reliable record.

Is it really that important? Since when is the service booklet an official document? What prevents a seller from simply throwing it away? It's not part of the vehicle, and there are plenty of vehicles offered without a service booklet, which many potential buyers don't even complain about, because they often assume that repairs on privately owned vehicles were done by private mechanics and therefore wouldn't be listed in the service booklet (especially for older used cars).

Regards,
Guste.

Oh, had I known that this minor comment would elicit a bigger reaction than the actual topic, I would have kept it to myself.

However one interprets the legal text (whether repairing with a used part constitutes a manipulation of the AI or not), even from a qualified legal expert (I spoke with one), you always get the statement "Generally speaking, it is the case that..." In non-legal German, it translates to: "but it could also be different." icon_smile.gif

Since the old speedometer was also malfunctioning and not accurately recording the mileage (I actually drove 78km while it showed 30km), the inaction regarding this issue since the middle of last year would also be a violation.

But, as already mentioned, all of this belongs in a legal forum (where the answer will likely be: Generally speaking...) icon_smile.gif

Sure, here's the translation:
