Hi Jan,
What's your heated seat doing right now? There was also a thread about it on the Ibiza forum.

Hi Steffi,

so far not yet... it's still too cold outside icon_wink.gif.

When it gets warmer, AND I have more time... then.

I should really take a closer look at the Ibiza forum sometime; it seems to have evolved quite a bit since I last visited it a long time ago.

Best regards,

Jan.

Here's a small tip for disassembling the seats:

If the clothes are already at the bottom, she'll just throw them into the washing machine... But please, use the delicate cycle icon_cool.gif.

Hi,

It's not really worth it for me: The car only has 21,000 km on it, and the seats still look as good as new.

Best regards,

Jan.

Oh, I see... You're doing well. icon_wink.gif

I have a light GT trim. And my car is turning 9 years old this year. So you can imagine that the seats aren't in great condition anymore, aside from the typical holes in the driver's seat icon_cry.gif.

Hello everyone,

*dusting off the old threads again*

Next, I want to do it icon_wink.gif).

The descriptions above are quite detailed, so it should actually work. However, if anyone has pictures of such a seating arrangement or knows where to find them, I would appreciate a short message.

I will definitely take pictures while disassembling and post them here or provide links to them.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello there!

The driver's side seat heater was already broken in my car and it probably cost around 270 German Marks to repair. It was covered under warranty at the time.

Well, after 3 years and 100,000 km, the passenger side is broken.

@Schose (and perhaps others as well).
Please send me pictures and tips about replacing the front seats of a Volkswagen Golf IV so I can see if I can do it myself.
I suspect that only the lower part of the seat cushion is broken.
(The switch is still in good working order; I have already tested it.)

I will also get heated seats in my Passat 35i if I opt for the leather upholstery. I'll make sure to choose that option.

Best regards, WarLord.

Hello everyone,

A quick question for everyone who has the Waeco Magic Heat installed:

I bought mine the day before yesterday, and I just tested it out on the floor using a computer power supply.

Electrically, the two levels are very simply designed: The seat and backrest each have two heating wires, which are connected in series such that each of the backrest wires, together with one of the seat wires, forms a heating circuit.

One of them is connected to level 1 of the switch and currently draws 2.04 amps, while the other draws 3.4 amps. Both were measured at 11.3 volts; the power supply cannot provide more voltage under this load icon_wink.gif.

So, it should provide the 45 or 25 watts mentioned in the instructions while running in the car.

What do you think... would it make sense to create a third power level that supplies electricity to both circuits? That would be approximately 70 watts... the question is whether that's necessary, or if the second level with its 45 watts is sufficient. What are your experiences with this?

I would have to use a different switch anyway, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

Best regards,

Jan.

'So, my electric blankets are already quite warm (too warm for my wife), when they actually get warm. Unfortunately, it takes a while before they finally become really cozy. An extra overdrive setting would be very useful.'

For comparison, I also have my Smart car. In that car, the original SH heating elements heat up quickly and their final temperature is comparable to a Waeco heater.

What I've noticed about my Waeco seat heaters: They get really nice and warm (after a while, like 5 minutes), but then they cool down so much that you can no longer feel that the seat heater is on... (although this might be a bit subjective icon_rolleyes.gif).
Definitely, the heating output is sufficient.
I didn't know they were two-stage, or are there new ones? The switches only have an 'on' or 'off' function...

I couldn't have said it better myself. That's exactly how I feel too.

Hello,

The "new" Waeco product does indeed have two levels, and this is also described on the waeco.de website. However, it lacks any temperature regulation or sensor within the heating mats – only simple heating coils and, at the end, a component that feels like a basic cable connector when touched, which is where both heating coils connect to ground.

"Something more substantial is coming next, and it will continue all the way to the switch. I'll probably only use the original wiring between the switch and the seat to avoid kinks and other issues. Hopefully, they put more thought into that aspect than they did when choosing the wire gauges."

My power supply provides 11.3 volts at the lug terminal, which I connected to one of the floppy drive cables, under full load (I know the floppy drive cables are too thin, so there's already some voltage drop, but I'm not measuring that). Of those 11.3 volts, 10.2 volts reach the connectors on the seat cushions.

"When fully operational," the heating system would draw 11 amps – which is definitely too much for the original wiring. The wires leading to the seats themselves, especially the return wire that serves both circuits, should be able to handle 5.5 amps without issue. That's why I'm installing an 11-amp fuse up to the switch. Furthermore, I'm planning the installation so that I can easily add a 5A diode between the two switch outputs without major disassembly. This would allow me to repurpose stage 1 as stage 3 without making any other changes, while leaving stage 2 as it is. Of course, I will then need to replace the 10A fuse with a 15A fuse.

"This way, I can initially test it in its original state, and then fine-tune it if necessary – maybe it will work just like this; after all, as my girlfriend would say, it's not supposed to be a barbecue."

Best regards,

Jan.

Okay, once you've installed the heating system, you should prepare yourself for the fact that the passenger side will likely be permanently on (you can actually omit the switch altogether): women like that kind of thing! icon_wink.gif icon_biggrin.gif

Hello,

@DocSnyder: Let's see... yesterday, my girlfriend lowered the difficulty level to 1 for me on every single game.

So... yesterday was a "do-it-yourself" day, and around 11 PM (there were some issues disassembling stubborn snap connections that were in the way when it came to the power supply), things finally started working really well.

The seats get wonderfully warm, but the effect described above with the 5 minutes doesn't occur on my Waeco. Perhaps they have changed something in the meantime. That's also why the overdrive function isn't necessary for now (maybe it will look different in winter), rather the opposite: It's good that there is a level 1 icon_wink.gif.

Certainly, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped with tips, suggestions, and comments in this thread. As a token of appreciation, here are the promised pictures along with the documentation.

Enjoy reading, and best regards,

Jan.

P.S.: @Rainer: If you like, I could turn this into a technical article – but I'm not sure how generally relevant it is.

What was the cost of the Waeco?

Does anyone know if the seat heater switch in a VW Golf 3 is just a potentiometer, so that you could potentially use it instead of a Waeco switch?
