Hi.
The 1Z doesn't have it, but the AFN does - referring to the automatic tensioner on the timing chain.
Has anyone ever retrofitted this before? There's a Volkswagen instruction that recommends retrofitting the 1Z if there's noise in the range of 1200-1500 RPM.
Have you noticed any changes after the renovation?
"Thank you."

Hi Martin,
I'm also very interested in this. I constantly struggle with these vibrations within the aforementioned RPM range. I have described my problem in detail here before.
'For me, only replacing the tensioner and flat belt brings some peace, but only for a short time. After about six months, the tensioner is loose again, and the tension pulley starts exhibiting large oscillations.'
Since I drive an automatic car, it's particularly unpleasant for me in the city, as I constantly find myself in the 1200-1800 RPM range. That's when I hear this annoying buzzing sound and even feel noticeable vibrations in the cockpit.
So far, no one I know has reported on a possible retrofit option!
They admit that it was a design flaw, but there's a possibility of eliminating this problem by replacing the spring element and belt. I've had to do this three times now, and eventually, the money invested just becomes too much for me. Retrofitting with a freewheel would definitely be worth it if it makes a difference!
So, we're looking for people to share their experiences...
Best regards, Georg.

A lighting machine with a free-running function would help.
The replacement alternator that is available cannot be connected to a standard alternator.
I also don't know if there are any options for upgrades. B.Eng (FH) u. KFZ Meister

Hi Martin,
The pulley with the freewheel mechanism mentioned in the article has the following number:

@ Rudi
I know .
But if it all gets better because of that, then it would almost be worth it to me.
Paying €100 just on the off chance seems like a lot to me... that's why I'm asking about experiences with retrofitting.

Hi Martin,
Have you read my comments on that topic?
It was a bit different, sometimes "free range" and sometimes not, but now it's "free range" again, which might be helpful.
Okay, here's the translation:
"By the way, the manufacturer of the clutch is INA, and this part is also available through parts suppliers; I paid around €69 for it. However, there are various different models available. The key differences are the diameter and the distance between the friction surface and the alternator."
Greetings.

Hmm, I think I read something about that before, but I don't remember exactly what it was or if it came from you.
Do you have a link?
Sure, no problem. Just provide the text you want me to translate.

Suchfunktion !
Please provide the part number for "freilauf" and the author is "Dieter." That's essentially all the information I need. If you require the same part as me, I can give you the order number next week. To do so, you'll need to measure the diameter and distance between the belt and the alternator.
Greetings.

Okay.
You have your own thread, but it was about the cleaning up of the perpetrators' mess.
And you wrote something in the ALH belt thread – I took that as a reason to ask about your experiences with freewheels.
I'm going to remove my LIMA disc and post the data here.
Thank you.

Hello,
I installed an AAZ alternator on my car (it was a really good deal ). It didn't have a freewheel clutch. This caused the belt to vibrate slightly. I drove to a local alternator specialist, and he installed a new freewheel clutch for 50 euros. Since then, everything has been quiet. You need a special tool for this. It was one of those shops where the master mechanic is also the boss and works on cars himself. It's always better than dealing with someone who just sits behind a desk.
Regards,
Maciek.

Can someone explain to me what this "free-roaming" feature is good for?
I already understand that it helps with vibrations.
Is this a freewheel like on a bicycle? But doesn't it only have one direction of rotation, which means it creates a fixed connection, or am I wrong? 1993 Audi 80 B4 1Z

@ Wolfi
Please read the link from the company INA.
http://www.ina.de/inaupdate/news/publics/present/fach_pkw_nebenaggregat/fa_pkw_nebenaggregat_de.asp
(I think I found this information before, and it was recently posted by Dieter in the ALH timing belt thread.)
It's well explained in there what the free-range system does.
The engine is accelerated with each ignition and then decelerated again. This causes vibrations.
Once accelerated, it can continue rolling freely until a new working cycle of a cylinder provides additional "force".
Without proper tensioning, it pulls on the tension roller side of the conveyor belt, causing it to flutter.

Here is the replacement part number from LUK for the alternator clutch: 535 0001 10. However, it fits very tightly and is rarely successfully replaced without the corresponding special tool and without removing the alternator. Furthermore, in 3 out of 5 cases where the clutch was replaced, the noise was not completely eliminated.
