Hello everyone,

Yesterday evening, the moment finally arrived.
I removed the intake manifold.
That's actually quite simple on the R5 TDI in the Touareg.
It took me 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, when I was disassembling it, the lever on the vacuum sensor for the shut-off valve broke off. I guess I'll have to get a new one...

But it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
it wasn't.
In each channel, the layer was only a maximum of 2-3 mm thick.
Right now, the intake manifold is still sitting in a bucket full of diesel fuel.
which turned black within a few seconds after...
I inserted the intake manifold.
I'll also be using bottle brushes of various sizes.
Clean, spray with brake cleaner, and reinstall.
I don't see any progress in addressing my performance issues here.
Interestingly, when I was removing the intake manifold yesterday, there was again a small oil puddle in the intake port in front of the bypass valve, even though I had cleaned everything just two days ago.

However, the turbine wheel has no clearance.
My current suspicion is that the combined heat and power (CHP) unit is likely 'leaking' oil.
for whatever reason.
Or, the oil (Longlife 2 0W30), which has been in the engine for 1 year and 20,000 km, has simply reached the end of its lifespan.

My second theory is that the KAT (catalytic converter) probably failed because the car was driven short distances (at most once every three months on the highway) during the past year, and the burnt oil caused it to fail.

When I look into the intake ports in the cylinder head, everything is slightly oily, but the valve stems and valves, as far as I can see, appear to be in very good condition. There are no deposits or anything like that.

What do you think about it?

Greetings.

Marcus.

Hello Marcus,

Please check if the engine control unit (ECU) in measurement block (MB) 8 indicates (last value, limitation via air mass) that the engine is receiving insufficient air.

When running at full throttle, the last value must be greater than the middle value (drive torque).

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,

I'll give it a try.
I just finished my first test drive, and I have to say...
Wow... it's doing incredibly well again...

However, I still had a problem; the diesel bath didn't do anything at all.
I had to find a can of brake cleaner today.
With that and a few bottle brushes, I was able to scrape away the dirt.
I wouldn't have thought there would be so much.

Inside a tub (approximately 50cm in diameter), there is about 2cm of dried dirt. That was all that was in the suction pipe.

Regarding the KGE and the Turbo:
I took everything apart today, and as I mentioned, I also checked the play in the turbo shaft: it's absolutely tight, there's no movement whatsoever.
The oil definitely came from the KGE, for whatever reason.
Anyway, I cleaned everything, and on the first start, I left the EGR valve open once.
There was no more smoke coming out, and the air that was escaping smelled like oil and was ice cold.

Then I went to the exhaust and noticed that, when idling, there was only a slight draft of air coming from the right and left sides.
After the test drive, there was a rattling sound coming from the muffler, and the airflow from the exhaust pipes was quite noticeable.

I'm going to do a test run with a laptop tomorrow to see what the MWB8 outputs.
The rattling sound coming from the exhaust pipe, as well as the faint air leak I can hear, indicates that there's likely something wrong with the catalytic converter.
Okay, let's get it out of here... As soon as I find a free lift, that thing is coming out, and it's going to be a big one.

Photos of the event will follow soon...
The results of the MWB8 are also included.

Thank you all very much.

Have a nice Sunday.

Regards,
Marcus.

Hello everyone,

Now, I have to revisit my 'old' and troublesome topic, but with a slight modification.

In April, I completely removed and cleaned the intake manifold of my R5 TDI engine in my VW Touareg.
Quite a bit of dirt came out.

The 20-liter bucket, in which I washed and brushed the intake manifold, had a 2-3 cm thick layer of dried rust at the bottom, after having been stored in the garage for some time.
So, that was all in the intake manifold... *tsk tsk*.

Anyway, I don't really have any performance issues anymore.
The fuel consumption has also noticeably decreased (from approximately 8.9 liters per 100 km to 11.2 liters per 100 km).
That's fine.

One of the rubber bushings that holds the engine cover in place fell off recently, and I replaced it with a new one.
While I was checking, I noticed that oil was dripping again from the 'throttle valve' at the bottom.
I haven't removed the coolant hose yet, but I'm sure it's full of oil again.

Therefore, I must assume that over a period of approximately 2500 km and 3 months, the engine's catalytic converter (KGE) 'coughed up' some oil again.

In addition, I changed the oil in April from 0W30 LL2 to Castrol RS 10W60. Since then, the engine has been running a bit smoother, but unfortunately, there's a noticeable 'turbo lag' when it's cold, although otherwise it's okay.

Why is oil leaking from the geothermal power plant again? Can you help me with this?

Just to mention, there are no error codes stored in the system's memory.

Best regards,

Marcus.

Okay, so if you're still using 1 liter of LL3 oil every 15,000 km, don't worry about it. The engine is just burning it off through the crankcase ventilation system, and it's accumulating in areas where air flows, like around a baffle plate. That's what's happening with mine too. If you give the engine a good workout again, it will get better lubrication from the inside.
that with the 10W60 oil, when it's cold, it produces less smoke than with a 0W30 LL, which is probably logical. otherwise, it would probably be a 0-weight oil icon_biggrin.gif - but just for the sake of it - a 60-weight oil for a TDI? completely unnecessary.

Hello,

Okay... then I don't have to worry about that.

Regarding 10W60 oil:
I had the same part installed in my previous Passat 3B Variant Highline with the 2.5 TDI engine, and it immediately eliminated any oil consumption.
Back then, the master mechanic at a tuning company recommended this to me.
He also mentioned that the R5TDI engine would handle it well.

Thank you again, and best regards.

Marcus.

Please ask the "expert" how he arrives at such a statement and whether he has ever heard of "oil release."

The statement isn't bad, but here's a statement that I still haven't forgotten:

Someone once tried to tell me that I should only use oil from the same brand, and that other oils wouldn't be compatible. I couldn't stop laughing.
It's unbelievable what some people say, despite having received an education.
I'm allowed to do that (which I'm already doing, haha).

Regarding oil consumption, it's quite clear that the vehicle will consume more oil with a thinner grade, and this isn't usually a problem. Just make sure to follow the manufacturer's specifications.
I know of a Golf where the mechanic said that 1 liter of oil per 10000 kilometers is already a lot, well icon_biggrin.gif.
By the way, I find the fuel consumption really remarkable.

When I bought my Allroad with 270,000 km on the odometer, I was prepared for a high oil consumption.
Now, after 36,000 km using LL3 5W-30 oil, there is a consumption of 0.25 liters.
I never thought something like that existed, when someone reported a consumption of 0.5 liters for a distance of 10,000 kilometers.
However, I must mention that at 260,000 km, it received new cylinder heads with roller rocker arms.
Nevertheless, it's quite remarkable, considering the mileage and that it's a 6-cylinder engine with a turbocharger.
My A3 needs 2 liters of oil for every 10,000 km driven.

...not bad icon_smile.gif

"Yes, mine also uses very little oil, although I don't even know exactly how much. I get the stuff so cheaply, it can drink as much as it wants, as long as it doesn't produce excessive smoke."

I use 0w30 longlife oil. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless I was having problems with the car.

Hello everyone,

The old, tiresome topic is being brought up again...

'It's leaking again from the throttle body.'
The current oil consumption is approximately 1 liter per 10,000 kilometers, using Castrol RS10W60 oil.

Am I crazy, or what?

The AGR (Abgasrückführung) is still closed, so no large debris should be entering the intake manifold.
The turbo's bearings seem to be in good condition; there is no noticeable play.

So, the oil is coming from the KGE again.

What could that be?

I only noticed the oil leak by chance because I had to replace a rubber buffer on the engine cover. The cover was rattling.

Can you give me a tip?

If the engine is 'spitting' oil into the crankcase ventilation system, I don't think that's right.

Regards,
Marcus.

Inappropriate oil for the engine... but the leaking is probably not caused by the oil.

Best regards, Rainer.

I'm curious to see how long these PD elements will last.

RS 10W-60 is probably the most unsuitable oil for this engine.
Without a standing heater, I wouldn't use it anywhere in the winter.
because it's thick like honey when it's cold.
I once tried it in my A3 TDI about 8 years ago. I still shudder when I think about it.
How poorly it ran when it was cold.

Hello,

I've noticed myself that the 10W16 oil is probably too thick for the engine.
However, it's not diesel or anything else that comes from the internal combustion engine; it's simply oil – but why?

What could be the reason for that?

Best regards,
Marcus.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'Addendum:'

Hello again,

Today, I spoke with the master mechanic on the phone, and he said he would look into the PD elements and the 10W60 oil again. So far, they haven't experienced any problems themselves, and they haven't heard of any problems either.

It doesn't matter...

I disconnected the hose from the crankcase ventilation system today because I noticed some smoke (white smoke) coming from it near the oil dipstick.
The dipstick itself hadn't come loose or anything. It looks like the seals are missing (2 O-rings), but I'm not sure if those are actually supposed to be there. There are definitely recesses on the dipstick where the plastic would be, though.

There's also some white smoke coming out of the KGE unit at the top.
It smells like oil and a little bit like diesel exhaust fumes!
Help...!!!
Is a engine failure imminent?

The temperatures were 90°C for the water and approximately 65°C for the oil when I checked.

What do you think about it?

I would like to change the oil this afternoon.
What oil would you recommend using instead of the LL2 0W30 oil specified?

Sure, here's the translation:

'Thank you in advance.'

Greetings.
Marcus.

Which oil should I best use besides the LL2 oil 0W30, which is specified?

and why don't you just use the oil that is intended for the engine? icon_rolleyes.gif

What does the idle speed control say in measurement block 13?

Best regards, Rainer.
