If the interval is really 300,000 km as it says everywhere (I wasn't aware of that, I overlooked it, sorry icon_biggrin.gif), then it's practically the same as the timing chain...

It would be interesting to see how such lifespan extensions are technically implemented, because in my experience, belts usually look quite worn after 90,000 kilometers.

Well, by reducing the load and benefiting from optimized properties.

PS: By the way, I've seen more broken timing chains than timing belts. All of them were from people I know who own or owned BMWs. These were mostly older models (I think E34, so an older 5-series). In those cars, it was common for the tensioner to fail, which often led to chain breakage (I know of three cases) and that happened long before the mileage reached 100,000 kilometers.

Absolutely unavoidable!

and we are among the people who are allowed to do 2-3 belt changes at a time, because we drive the cars for a long time.

So, with two chain replacements (180,000 km or 240,000 km for newer models), you are within the mileage range where manufacturers of engines with timing chains strongly recommend replacing the timing chain.
Okay, go ahead and pay for this exchange... or better yet, just do three regular maintenance changes instead.

So, I've seen more broken chains than timing belts.

Okay, I haven't seen a lot of defective chains either, but it's not a large number. It balances out. However, the ZR motors are significantly more popular among users.
