I'm having a problem with a Ford Galaxy with an AUY engine. The owner continued driving with the faulty turbocharger until the engine stalled. Although the oil pressure warning light was on, it was ignored. The vehicle had lost all power.
The turbocharger is definitely faulty. Besides the turbocharger itself, what else should I check and replace? Perhaps the main bearings or the connecting rod bearings? Or should I just clean the oil supply lines to the turbocharger, replace the turbo, refill the oil, and then start the engine?

Is the engine still running?

Remove the oil pan and first check the connecting rod bearings. If those are okay, I don't think there's anything wrong with the main bearings, but I can check them at the same time if you want.

Hello!

Alternatively:

I briefly checked, and it seems there are plenty of used engines available, around €1000, with turbochargers, from dealers.
(Warranty!)
If the turbocharger has produced debris/swarf.
Clean the intercooler and install new intercooler coolant.
And then that should be done.

Assuming the engine was properly secured, which it apparently was,
I think he's moved past it.
That's at least my experience with engines that were run without oil until they seized.
Grüße, Steffen!

The engine revs freely and has good compression. In my opinion, the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings are the weakest points when operated without oil pressure.

Hi!

Well, that gives us some hope.

You could check out the Pleul products, as I mentioned before.
Based on what I saw, there was a Pleul fastener.
You could immediately tell; it looked either burnt or had a reddish hue.
In the second case, the connecting rod pierced the engine block.
In the third case, the piston likely hit the cylinder head and broke into hundreds of pieces.

I believe you can also try running the engine, at least for a test, without the turbocharger.
And then listen to see if it runs smoothly and evenly, and check if the exhaust fumes look reasonably normal.

What might also be interesting is what the oil residue looks like inside the engine.
whether it contains metal particles.
Grüße, Steffen!

The connecting rod bearings are in good condition. When viewed from below, the cylinder walls appear smooth and free of debris. I think the operator was really lucky!

Then, the only thing left to figure out is why the engine stalled.

To be honest, with people like that, I would install a complete, used engine with a warranty. Imagine if a hidden problem surfaces after 4000 km, and the car breaks down. Then, in their eyes, you're the idiot, and they'll tell everyone about it.
Based on my experience, I know that it's best to sell such disabled people an expensive, but 100% guaranteed repair icon_wink.gif.

Hello,

Quote:
until the engine stalled

If the engine wasn't "seized," it may have ingested a large amount of oil into the intake manifold. This could result in bent connecting rods. -> Check the compression test and data block 13.

If the ZK (spark plug) is removed/needs to be replaced, measure the piston protrusion.

Best regards, Rainer.

I'll be repairing the vehicle this weekend. The idea of adding a bit of oil is a good one. I manually rotated the engine. If there's no oil in the exhaust manifold, I can rule that out as the cause.

The engine has now been repaired. I checked the camshaft bearings, but I couldn't find any damage.
The turbocharger was removed and the damage was analyzed. The turbine wheel broke off from the shaft on the exhaust side and ended up in front of the catalytic converter. As a result, oil was pumped into the exhaust system.
Installed a new turbocharger. It's a 'no-name' turbocharger from China, costing €460 including shipping, without a core exchange (Edit Admin: No links to online marketplaces!). It's probably not the best choice, but the vehicle likely won't be in the possession of the current driver for much longer. Also, it's completely new.
The vehicle is smoking excessively immediately after starting the engine. The oil in the exhaust system needs to be burned off. The engine runs smoothly and has very good performance, just like before the issue.

Two full tanks of fuel have already been used. The engine runs smoothly and quietly! No oil consumption is noticeable. There are also no metal shavings in the engine oil.
Lucky to be in the new year! icon_lol.gif

The buyer will honestly be told exactly what has been installed.

Sure, here's the translation:

"Ne seins" translates to "Don't be."

Therefore, the question was probably intended to mean:

Does the customer know what they are buying? I'm just guessing, but I think so!

Sure, the customer is aware. I offered him the €460 option and the original Garrett replacement part for €610. Ultimately, the customer made the decision. The customer is always right. Of course, I explained the pros and cons of each option.
Wenn das Auto verkauft wird, muss der neue Besitzer ja nichts vom Nachbauturbolader wissen. Or maybe?
But, as I said, that's not my problem.
