Did you connect the new cable in parallel with the old one, or did you disconnect the old cable on both ends and only use the new cable?

Regarding the engine that won't start, I suspect you may have disconnected some fuses in the SB fuse box or not reconnected the relay bridge. A VCDS scan can help diagnose this.
